you can watch this video in how to remove the front part of the instrument cluster, and it was so much easier to do it, also remove the ones from the stereo too. I just put a microfiber towel under each time.

I tried doing it myself and I messed it up big time. If I decide to buy one again. I’ll have a tint shop install it for me. For the fear of me messing it up again

Guys I just went thru this issue trying to find the correct part number that has the Black Trim around the gauges. Here is my post from that tread.

OK I can now confirm if you want to get rid of the ugly Sliver trim in your gauge cluster order part 83852-04J90.

The outstanding question as too which one do I want has now been answered...

Here is a breakdown of my experience:

    83852-04J70 - Silver like trim
    83852-04F00 - Gunmetal grey trim
    83852-04J90 - Black trim

Installed screen protector on my gear shift and radio which came out pretty good. Imstrument cluster looks like crap. I may have used too much soap solution, after a few days most bubbles disappeared. Two weeks later I still had two bubbles that drove me nuts but still looked better than a scratched cluster. I took a sewing needle and carefully poked a hole thru the film and with the supplied squeegee over the bubbles which some solution oozed out. Three days after it looks surprisingly good and I can live with it. I bought extra film which I don't think I'll need and even bought a new cluster which I'll now return. Why they used shitty plastic is beyond me, I'd pay extra for glass.....

3rd gen problem that I never hope to deal with. I have a new EML and will take your advise and wisdom to heart. Only use compressed air... For Toyota candy viewing. Here is my stock CD player console working in my 07.

    Sweet,

Looks like she placed it over some mild scratches… is it best just to go ahead and order the new replacement instrument piece w the protector?

It covers existing scratches up to a point. Mine was all scratched to hell from simply wiping dust off. They were only visible in glancing sun light, but disappeared once the film was applied.
As long as you don’t have any deep scratches or gouges that are visible in the dark the film should cover them.
You can pay extra to get a second set of films. If you apply the first one to your existing plexi and don’t like the results, you could order a new piece and apply the second before you install it

Just bought a new Tacoma. Carefully wiped the instrument cluster down with some windex and a paper towel since it was really dusty from the dealer. I have done this countless times in the past with numerous different cars (almost all Toyota and Lexus). Wiping it down scratched the shit out of the plastic. Figured there might be some protective plastic cover that I needed to peel off. Nope. Then I discover this thread. This is really pathetic for Toyota--and they have been using shit plastic on these trucks for how many years? Dealers should warn new buyers about this. I wouldn't have touched it had I known it was such poor quality. Guess I need a new plastic piece like others in this thread. Loving the truck otherwise.
