Does anyone know what could be causing a loud clunking sound when driving in 4WD High? The sound goes away when I switch back to 2WD.

I may not be able to help you, but those who can will be able to help better if you provide more information.

    How fast are you going?

Does it make the noise when stationary, or only in motion?

Is it the entire time it is in 4WD? Only when starting out in 4WD? Only when certain conditions (speed, RPMs, etc.) are met.

What surfaces are you driving on? Wet? Dry? Icy? Snow covered? Paved? Dirt?

Do you regularly use 4WD in this truck?

It happens only when it's moving. Even at 5 mph. It was dry & paved. I put it in 4WD sometimes to make it harder to get towed. And I was also told to run it in 4WD occasionally whether or not needed.

The only time I really use the 4WD is if I'm out hunting, on an undeveloped jobsite, or in the snow.

not really... usually clicking when youre moving in 4wd is the sign that your CVs are binding/going bad..

I’ve seen the label on the driveshaft rot off and hit the heat shield.

This sounds like u joints to me but needs inspection.

Don't do that. If you're going to get towed it won't stop them from towing you, but it will break something. Yes, you need to operate in 4X4 regularly, but only on a road surface that will allow for wheel slippage. Something like gravel, sand or loose dirt. Doing this on pavement will break stuff.

What kind of sketchy shit are you doing to fear being towed? Or you got some serious parking fines... o_O

Nothing sketchy. Just parking in NYC for work (Union Ironworker) with weird parking signs saying different times/days. I guess I'm parnoid. Last thing I want after a long day on the iron is to find an empty parking spot.

it clunks when going into and out of 4wd sometimes. completely normal. but it shouldn't really be clunking once you are already in 4x4.

A little bit of driving in 4WD on dry pavement shouldn’t cause this. Racing in a circle with the steering wheel cranked might.

It's fine to put in 4x on pavement if driving straight. I do this about once a month too to make sure everything is happy.

Grease front driveshaft, and visually check u joints and cvs.

It’s in the owner’s manual not to drive on hard dry surface in 4x4 mode. You got away with before but the stresses on the drive train appear to have caught up. If you are lucky, its just a busted CV shaft or u-joint, and not internal in the diff case.
