    Hi,
I changed the clutch pack in my rear diff less than a year ago. Did a post about it here:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/replacing-clutch-plates-in-rear-differential.713095/

Now, less than a year and 10K later, the pack is worn out?! I would say my driving is typical northern driving, some city, some gravel and some snow.

There is no pre-load mentioned in the FSM so it is hard to know if I had the correct setup. Someone mentioned 150 ft lbs here in the forum and I had roughly 130NM after I changed the clutch pack last year - now I have 30NM (or nothing). The diff once again behaves like an open diff.

I added a picture of the pack and it is already below spec and the plates are really worn, unevenly.clutch.jpg

I use Mobil Delvac Limited Slip oil - which on paper looks like the correct spec.

What could have gone wrong here? Wrong pre-load? Wrong oil?

This should not be a yearly maintenance right ;-)

how many miles did you have on the original pack? I'm just curious, as I've got 180k and mine is still good.

it sounds like you installed correctly and use lsd oil, what brand pack did you install? shitty pack maybe?

It's only 110k on it, so not that much. I used OEM stuff, ordered from the dealer.

How can you tell that yours is fine - do the wheels turn in the same direction when you lift the rear, or do you put a Torque wrench on the one of the lugs? Or do you use the good old burn out method?

    What oil do you use?

    Thanks!

Try the Toyota LSD oil and do a bunch of slow figure 8 after changing the oil. Brought back to life an old supra diff for me. Clutch disk looks very similar.

I have 200K on mine and I think it still works as it should based on how it feels when I off-road. I will feel one wheel start to slip, then I feel the opposite wheel catch traction. If that one spins, I put it in 4x4 or I may decide to reverse and try a different line. I’ve been using full syn Valvoline with no lsd modifiers added. I have used Mobile 1 in the past.

Wrong fluid or over tight and you'd feel the axle hop around corners in parking lots.

Makes no sense, but I've never rebuilt a pack, just replaced them as a set so I have no real input.

It looks like no preload, just measuring shims while pressuring down on the pack.

Looks confusing, I would likely take it to a driveline specialist. I wonder if the spring is the issue?
