Very interesting, more data than they listed on the website specs for it. So assuming those 6 white are for the backlight? Is that 4k indicating the color of the 2 main LEDs? SSC3 data sheets simply list the same LED info, but in SAE fog thread they showed the selective yellow using a 4k light (hence the minor drop in Candela between 6k white and 3k selective yellow versions).

edit: Read a little bit farther and it does appear those spec sheets indicate the selective yellow SSC2 would use a 4k light. Still not sure why the SSC3 and SSC2 would have such different output delta between the white/yellow

I assumed at first it would be basically the SS3 repackaged down to 2 LEDs with probably everything else the same, but the much larger Candela delta between 6k and 3k on SS2 specs made me question what is different vs SSC3.

Basically I was hoping the SSC2 could output a 4k light by swapping in a clear lens on the selective yellow light like the SSC3 allows.

 

LOL. Talk about defensive buyer's stockholm syndrome. Maybe they should read a data based objective review of Lasfit vs DD covered in high detail in post #370.

I've probably gone though $20k+ easy in lighting products and spent thousands more in test gear, I have zero allegiance other than to the measured data. Show me another lighting enthusiast referenced by one of the worlds top automotive lighting experts in an interview, pitched an idea for a new product and helped bring the very first selective yellow LED fogs to the market with the Rigid Selective Yellow, and was personally responsible for a lighting product recall with Baja Designs failed fogs. Thats just in my spare time, I've got a real job. I provide all this to the community on my own time and expense because it is something I am passionate about as an extreme lighting enthusiast that wants people to have better lighting without blinding others and not be misled by the LED marketers.

As covered in other threads, lights are acquired by me paying full retail, discounted retail, lending for review and returning to the manufacture, pre-production units sent for corrective feedback, free units for review, units donated by the grassroots TW community, units lent for review by the TW grass grassroots community, units lent and donated from other several other non-TW forum communities because it is often viewed there is no better place for unbiased data backed review by someone not working in the lighting industry. These threads started as my personal crusade against LED companies blatant disregard to compliance standards willingly and promoting endangering other motorists on the road and was fully funded by me alone, many many thousands spent to make a point I was passionate about. Eventually it started to snowball and more and more manufactures started to face backlash for promoting non-SAE products for street use and cite these threads as reference. I'll always call a spade a spade and no-one gets preferential treatment.

 

And many of us send a very heartfelt thank you for this.

 

DD SC2 Pro 6000k. No dome over the emitter.

 

Flat emitter for these too, SS3 pro 4000k no backlight.

 

Any idea why the SSC2s (and 1s) are only IP67 rated? The SS3s and SS5s are both IP69K rated so why not shoot for that all the way up and down the lineup?

 

Could someone explain the need for backlights, or lack there of? Specifically pertaining to the SS3? Apologies if this has been covered but I am about to pull the trigger on these and want to be fluent in my purchase.

 

Astetics, some like the look of the backlight and want to use like a marker light

I have them (red) on my SSC2 reverse lights in my aftermarket bumper. They act like a marker light in the rear bumper. Forward facing, doubt I'd bother.

 

Also, there was some talk about the SS3 Max backlight versions having slightly more intensity than the standard Max, but I never followed up to see what that difference spec'd out to be.

 

I'd speculate the breather. There are only 3 openings on the lamps; the lens seal, the electrical connector seal and the breather. The lens seal is virtually the same. The electrical connector is virtually the same. The breather on the SS3s is on the back deep into the lamp protected by the surrounding heat sinks. On the SSC2 and SSC1 the breather is on the bottom of the lamp, completely exposed. In a high pressure IP spray test, the bottom exposed location would be more problematic vs the protected position on the back of the SS3s. However, that is all complete speculation on my part. Regardless I wouldn't be worried about it. Reputable US manufactures with a solid warranty will likely be far more durable than the Chinese import lights that might claim higher IP ratings to promote sales, which they don't actually meet.

Roughly 5% more according to DD for the backlight Max, and that is due to a new revised higher power board on the backlit model. However the backlight circuit isn't as efficient and eats up much of the power increase, resulting in only small gains on the backlight model.

 

I thought the background circuit turns off when the main chips are turned on. Does the board still consume power to switch the backlights off?

 

It is due to extra resistance in the backlit circuit board unrelated to the chip being turned on, so basically yes, the board is less efficient.

 

I just ordered mine and decided to go without the backlights. Thought it better to save the extra $40 and put it towards something else.

Though I wish I didn't know the backlit ones were slightly more powerful because I probably would have gone for those if I had . (But it sounds like it's basically imperceptible so... much ado about nothing)

 

Personally, I wouldn't order backlights either. The difference is not perceivable to the human eye, you need instrumented testing.

 

The backlight feature is mainly just for the "cool" factor. I have the feature in my SS5 Pro's and it is hooked to my running light circuit. My SS3 Max fogs do not have it.

 

last night I saw a raptor with a full rigid light ensemble with the amber backlighting.
Thing looked a snow plow headed down the road.
