    Ahoy TW

I am attempting the ARB Sarari Snorkel install and I noticed they mentioned to plug the existing drain holes on the air inlet hose and lid.

Does anybody have any suggestions for this above and beyond slapping it full of silicone.

I am thinking a small bolt with washers and a gasket on one side but not sure of the right way to do it.

I've also seen online they mention utilizing silicone for the other joints that are safe for sensors as the silicone may trip off the O2 sensor.

Anyone have any suggestions on brands, so far in my searches I couldn't find any silicone that says it safe for sensors.

    Thanks

I was told by a Toyota mechanic who has done many arb snorkel installs, he say to keep the drain holes open to drain water Incase if some water comes through the snorkel such as rain

I was wondering the same thing. If you leave it open, will water get in when crossing water or will it be minimal?

My mechanic basically said if you’re in water that deep you’ve got a whole bunch of other issues you’re worrying about. I think if you were to go in water that deep it would need to be with a good bow wave and would need to be short distance.

Kind of makes you question the whole benefit of a snorkel. Unless the Overlander image is important to you.

A few guys on here have hydro locked, if your doing deep water I’d get one.

It’s just insurance really. There are some deep crossings out west here depending on the year and I’d rather have one than worrying.

    4 run, 2 don't
Drain holes serve a purpose, leave them open.

With that said, let's not forget why snorkels are a thing; their primary function is to bring cleaner air into the vehicle.

Your vehicle does not become a submarine when you install a snorkel.

You are overthinking it, slap it full of silicone if you want to seal them. Although I've done plenty of water crossings in the spring melt in Idaho with no issues, I'm also not an idiot to think that sealing it will make a difference if I go too deep, it just takes a sip of water to fuck a lot of things up.
Best advice you can heed, don't intentionally look for water to drive through and avoid it if possible.

    Check build thread!
A couple things to add onto the why get a snorkel debate that never ends.

A couple of us northern guys have had our air boxes end up packed with snow after bashing thru heavy power snow wheeling, tripping codes, limp modes, and all sorts of havock. Given the right precleaner, we have no such issues.

Flipping the snorkel back helped keep snow out some. I still keep a drain hole 5 years into running a snorkel. No issues. I did get an aftermarket air box with a drain hole so I’m no longer stock.

I have a snorkel with a sy-klone prefilter so I didn’t have to worry about stuff going down my snorkel. It works extremely well. I usually switch my filter out once a year and when I check this year my filter was pretty much clean. I was super surprised.

Alright on to the question. Those little holes should be fine left open. I been through plenty of deep crossings in the ozarks. The key is to keep your speed up. I’ve had water over my hood and have been fine. As long as you’re moving forward it doesn’t allow the water to soak into places it shouldn’t.

If you get stuck and stop in the water and it starts soaking into everything that’s where you have major issues and really the issues are coming from inside the cab electronics getting wet. They’re far less weather resistant than what’s under your hood.

Don’t forget to get a rear diff breather if you plan on doing a lot of water crossings.

How did you turn it back?
I had an ARB safari snorkel on my 93 pathfinder and it was all one piece that angled rearwards and the intake opening faced down.....it was a great design and not sure why they all aren’t made that way.
