Shop washed off my Fluid Film thinking it was leaking oil

Took my truck in to get some fluids changed. They washed the undercarriage (including frame rails & rear differential) thinking that my fluid film was instead oil leaks. I just applied the fluid film a couple weeks ago. They realized the mistake after I told them and are gonna let me use their hoist to re-apply the FF, as well as deduct the cost of the FF off the bill. Still kind of annoyed though.

If they thought that was oil leaking, I might find a different shop

Plan and simple. I wouldn't be applying any FF myself utilizing their equipment, they are. They can pay their tech to do it.

Why would you be happy to apply the FF yourself? You took it in for an oil service, not a detail service.

I am surprised the are doing the correct thing.

    Very good of them.

Though that would had to been a very major oil leak to coat the truck so well.

I would use the lift and take their money but never let them touch your truck again.

I recently went for an alignment and because one of the boots had pb blaster overspray on it they said it was wet and leaking. They suggested I replace the rack....I was there for an alignment because I replaced the rack!

as other said, at least they are compensating.

that being said, if you can (have the means) fluid film your entire truck why are you taking it somewhere to change oil? Do it yourself

Good on them letting you use their lift.

As an owner of a lift, it makes applying the FF so much easier.

You will do the job twice as fast and do a better job than if the truck was on jack stands.

    Everyone makes mistakes.

I would sit there and watch. Why would I do it myself when it was their screw up. That's like going in for an oil change and your changing the oil change yourself.

How long ago was the FF applied?

It's only good for a couple years anyways. It has to be maintained with another coat in future. You might have come out ahead.

The lowest paid person always does the grunt work.

Good help is so hard to find.

I can only guess someone took a fast glance under the truck . With a quick glance if you had no idea of on going frame protection of Tacoma`s it would look like massive oil leaks. A very easy mistake to make.

    Suggested better wash that off.

Without more back ground who knows.

I would not trust the same tech to apply the Fluid Film as well as you the OP will.

I have seen the same type of mistakes at the best of shops it happens.

    Best of Luck!!

I sold my built 05’ Ram with Radius arm conversion and all custom crossover steering ect. The guy that bought it took it to the dealer to have something looked at.

They decided to put it on the lift and do a multipoint inspection. Well, it fell off the lift and caused all sorts or damage. They tried to say the factory lifting points were modified so it wasn’t their fault.

End of story was they had to fix it. Hard part was it bent the pitman arm, and I couldn’t remember what brand I used, and they kept ordering the wrong part.

Should of kept it. 94k and I fully built it and had it since it was almost new :frusty:

It kinda works in the OP's favor all around... The fluid film already creeped into all the pores and fissures, so the first application wasn't a waste of time, but now he's getting free use of a hoist to do it better. He's not paying for the extra fluid film, and this was a low impact way of figuring out that the shop is cool, but not super competent :cool:

If you live in an area that requires fluid film, even the lowest guy on the totem pole should at least know to ask this time of year.

Few months ago ......a thread of horror.....
took truck in for alignment.......they said 'let us change your oil'...

OP says they put a chevy oil plug back in by mistake....
its one of those.....'you only get to tighten it once'.....

How can someone be so stupid.....
.....your low end help......I mean anybody could do an oil change.....right?

    -----------------

Interesting thing is.....they were just trying to help you clean that mess up while they had easy access to it....
Kinda like washing the oysters off before served......sounded like a good ideal....

I don't trust them to apply it correctly

I have a camper on my truck and don't wanna take it off just to FF, also, weather is shit out now and I don't wanna be working on my truck in the rain. I've never changed my oil (not that I couldn't), its just easier for me to take it to a shop.

Yes, and no. It's just a waste of time really. I applied the flluid film correctly the first time. and I'm still paying for another jug of FF, their just deducting it from my bill. But yeah, theyre a good shop, it's why I took my truck there, they just made a mistake.

Sucks that it happened, but the guy there had good intentions and even believed he was going the extra mile cleaning all the "oil" when he didn't have to.

Next time I'd be clear on what to do and what not to do when getting the truck serviced. Glad I do all my own stuff to prevent stuff like that from happening.
