Ford does not have any cylinder deactivation on any engine that I'm aware of. They do have the Lighting though lol.

My Lightning has active fuel mismanagement. It’s the pedal on the right.

I gues I meant mid 90's, I do like both generations.

Like this one dual tanks on a short bed V8. That's not something you see anymore.

I love an old square body truck. Had a 86 C10 but a 305 is gutless. Crazy how much 80’s and 90’s trucks are worth now. Checking out bringatrailer or carsandbids makes me wish I had a barn full of RCSB GM and Ford trucks. Forget a 401k, that’s your retirement fund right there.

Having a barn full of 80s and 90s RCSB GMs and Fords would be nice to have. I was thinking yesterday I should have bought a new RC 4x4 Tacoma every year starting in 1995 thru 2004. Kept them stock and well maintained indoors and never driven in the winter.

I remember dual tanks. One tank to get you into town and the other tank to get you home.

My 2014 Silverado had 69k trouble free miles. 5.3 was smooth running, lots of power and gas milage was ok. Truck was well maintained, never towed anything , great daily driver for 8 years. I had heard about all the engine and trans problems with the Silverado but dismissed them as my truck ran great. i was driving home from work one evening and with no warning at all engine seized. Complete engine failure. No check engine light, no overheating, oil pressure gauge reading normal. This is all that is left of cylinder #2.

Took 6 weeks to get a reman engine from Chevrolet. Service Advisor said he has 3 other Sliverados waiting for an engine too. Chevrolet is complete garbage.

They ever get a root cause? I’ve heard mixed stories, but it sorta feels like the extra complexity they’ve added to achieve better mpg is costing them reliability.

I would say no. My own experiences with GM have been a mixed bag at best. Assuming your Tacoma is well maintained, it should last many more years.

No. just a big hole in engine where cylinder 2 was. My guess is it dropped a valve. For the piston to break and snap the rod it must have hit something. Unless maybe the piston just broke because Chevrolet is junk.

Silverado is a great truck. Wouldn’t be a bad move.

No personal owner experience. But I see Chevy/GMC has the lowest relibility rating on Consumer Reports out of the half ton full size trucks. 1/5 rating.

And Im a member of a Silverado FB group and there have been a number of lifter failures on the late model years. Some with under 5000 miles

According to Dashboard Light, which is only supposed to look at powertrain reliability, GM is better than Ford.

My last pickup before my new Tacoma was a 2015 4.3 v6 crew cab 4x4. It was a pretty good truck and I dont think that year had the problems that they are seeing now. It was pretty good on gas but would knock for octane in the summer months so I used the ethanol gas alot. It did suffer from oil consumption. Had to check the level constantly. GM is so addicted to that cylinder decactivation garbage. Ok I get the v8 drop to 4 cyl but do you need to cut 2 cyl on a v6? That's when all the droning and octane pinging would happen. I had a 2001 Tahoe with one of the early 5.3 vortec engines. One of the best motors I've ever owned. GM needs to stop over thinking it and stick to the tried and true.

I can see from their perspective how it's tough to hit the CAFE requirements. They sell way more trucks than cars, especially compared to a company like Toyota.
