The other day I locked my keys in my truck and after about an hour I was finally able to break into my truck and fish my keys out with a wire coat hanger…

What this post is about is, I’m wondering if I could get a regular “house type key” made that would unlock the door to my truck that I would be able to keep in my wallet? I know Tacomas have the chip in key thing going on to actually start the truck. I understand there are the magnetic keys on the frame or hitch safe things but I’d rather keep a key on my person as my wallet never leaves my body when I have it.

Any advice is appreciated. In my first gen Tacoma, the driver side rear window latch was broken so I could pop it out and unlock the door that way but it’s not the same on this generation and I don’t feel like almost breaking the back slider to unlock the truck. Especially if the keys aren’t in an accessible place.

    Thanks

Yup, you can get a hardware store to trace your key to a slim house key.

Also dealers carry "dummy" keys for this as well.

Thank you! Do you think Lowes or a place similar could make a key like that?

Maybe, I work at a dealer with a key machine so I haven't tried it at a hardware store but they look similar, and key tracing is fairly simple. A real locksmith is ideal, but they are rare, and mostly mobile now.
