I’ve always found amsoil and Royal people advocates to come off like Mary Kay products.

Too hard to find, more expensive, people inflate their performance and it’s unnecessary.

For a regular Toyota I’d buy which ever 0w20 is on sale.

Or man up and go big

I’ve always used the generic Toyota synthetic. Dealers used to sell it cheap before some things happened in the world.

Even my employee cost for it went up. It's nearly at par with bottled stuff at walmart for me.

I have been using the RP 0w20 since my trucks first Oil change and I haven't had any issues with it. Not saying it is any better than other brands oil because I use other brands in my other cars but it has been been fine for me in the taco.

Yes I meant it was dry underneath when I changed it a couple weeks ago, then I noticed the leak, 2 weeks after filling it with RP, anticipating the rear main seal leaking, but not confirmed yet. RP was on sale so I picked some up, its slick cause the Engine seemed so smooth after I put it in. Ill update when I receive info

It's been 10 days. And the dealer hasn't responded to you yet? I mean don't they know the interwebz are waiting for their diagnosis?

i used toyota 0w20 for my first oil change and it was still very clean after 5K miles when i took it to the dealer for the first free oil change.

the dealer told me they used mobil 1. i noticed the oil appears darker and maybe dirtier (?) after 3K miles with the mobil 1. my driving pattern has not changed - no towing, high RPM, dusty roads, etc. kinda odd but at the next oil change i will go back to the toyota branded oil and see if there is a difference in appearance after 3K miles.

anyway, that is my unrelated contribution to this thread. :anonymous:

Oil getting dark means it’s doing it’s job keeping things clean.

In August I had Cylinder 2 direct injector stuck open throwing P0202 (open injector circuit) and P0302 (misfire) codes, they replaced the injector. Middle of October I changed the oil first time Royal Purple and changed and replaced with OEM Oil Filter. 2 weeks (Halloween Eve) later I get a strong order of fuel while using window defroster, it was a raining and dark so I couldn't view or see anything, I dropped it off in the morning telling them about possible fuel leak since they recently changed the #2 direct injector. That afternoon, I get a call from advisor telling me they think its oil on the cross member something with dye in it, but I did see fuel leaking on the right side cross member and wasn't going to argue, i state I recently added RP oil for the first time, so they wait to further diagnosis when they receive the intake gasket supply chain issue was stated, and they will investigate when they have time. Yesterday I get a call its fixed, cylinder 4 injector O-ring split and replaced, charged on warranty parts for the repair, nothing about oil leaking cause the usual advisor was out and I was assisted by another. I picked it up yesterday, I don't see any oil leaking, cross member is clean, its been one day. During that time is when I started google-ing royal purple leaks and finding posts on other vehicle forums after the advisor/techs thinking it was oil, and I snapped the one picture before dropping it off I posted. I was anticipating a rear main seal leak but they didn't mention anything. I will continue to monitor, it still has RP 0-20w in it.

I'm kinda surprised nobody has mentioned the 2019 "Best Oil Championship" put on by Project Farm lol

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWuKvnCq1js

Not super scientific but the testing covers what most folks care about with regard to engine & oil performance. I love the fact he mails out a trophy to the winner of the championship haha.

Mobil 1 is well known for having an additive package which darkens quite rapidly once poured into an engine. Does that mean it isn't good to go? No, not in the least.

use amsoil if you're gonna spend the rp money, it's independent lab (blackstone) proven to be better than pretty much all synthetics and actually last to 25k with 5k oil filter and top off changes, verified by bobs website and project farm's youtube channel (he did a straight up ingredients, warm/cold flow, and wear test on rp and amsoil, rp lost every test) not amsoil tests which say the same but hey, I trust independent testing more. sure it's more up front but it lasts to 25k!! I drive 40k a year so that's just two oil changes a year for me, national average is 12k so that one oil change every 2 years, costs less in the long run ;) just sayin.
(nor I or anyone I know or are related to currently or ever has worked for amsoil or get any sort of payments from them btw)

also toyota wouldn't recommend that weight if it was causing problems, never heard it was either. now I have heard of heavier oil causing problems though

    just my $0.02
