Stay safe, 24 hours is a long stretch!
Hi all. Been missing out on yarn spinning and other good stuff I see:D
I just been keeping busy at work, kind of engineer as I go on this leak stop device. I'll share a picture when it's finished. The place of this leak is kind of a odd place to try and patch, right in the corner where a 8" pipe is welded to ~86" diameter or so. I've also had to get some computer training done.
When they first showed me a picture of this leak, I'm like..uh...ok...let me turn that another direction...it's disturbing me:anonymous:

Is that all rust or something else?

Do you need to patch while the pipes are full of fluid?

Pressure ?? Clean and weld in some big patches?

A guy I used to work with would tell everyone to fix their leaks with it. I would always call him out on not knowing how to fix it.

Yes it is rust and large pipe is full / flowing water.
It's weird because everyone of the water boxes has this 8" pipe about 6' long coming off of them but then they're just capped off. Like was going to be part of original design or something that could be added later...no one I asked could say for certain.
The correct and long term repair will require welding like you said. I'm 99% sure that next outage they will do a inspection on all of them, what referred to as extent of condition in the industry.
I know they have ability to isolate these water boxes but often run into difficulty due to sand silting in them. Plus it requires a down-power because without all 4 condenser they don't pull the same vacuum.

That rust is going to be a major problem.

It will be interesting to see what indeed works.

    Good luck !

Well it honestly can't be any worse than what the FIN Team has up against it now. I hope..(explanation to follow). Anyways they have a piece of plastic, piece of rubber and piece of silicone berm material shoved up against it and held with a ratchet strap:rofl:
It's actually got the leak slowed to less than a gallon a minute. Draining into a large bucket(75gal or so) then being pumped out.
Now for some 'splaining; this thing I'm fabricating is from 2" x 6" aluminum 18" square with 8.675" hole in the middle to tighten down on the pipe, (strongback) then that's going to have pushers on it to push another piece of aluminum with that similar silicone berm material up against it. Another hero or zero proposition. Anyways this thing has some weight to it and I floated the question of weld integrity on the remaining piece. Asking what's the worst that can happen...if we apply pressure and weight and separate the whole pipe:eek::confused:

I'm wondering if the valve train/pushrods/lifters are binding from the spacing of the rocker arms being all messed up.
Try correcting the valve train problem before taking anything else apart.

Step 2: I believe the entire rocker shaft assembly lifts right off with just a few bolts, do that, remove the plugs and see if it will turn. You could also check and make sure the rockers are all free to move at the same time.

I believe oil is pumped through the rocker shaft, something might have shifted blocking the oil holes and galled a surface up.

Head gaskets typically fail by letting water into the cylinder, not into oil. Easy way to tell is hand in front of exhaust… if smoke turns to moisture… water present. Exhaust should be dry… even if smoky due to oil presence(rings or valve stems). I’m going with gear interference. I’d be surprised if a bearing. The loss of power typically isn’t a side effect of that.

I thought of that when he first posted, but there is no misalignment and only oil stain/friction markings from the expansion/shift of the shaft without the springs/thrust. There should be oil cuts in the rod as well as points in the rockers. I’d guess the lifters are solid, but may be hydraulic… pushing oil up the pushrods.

BBNP is excellent this time of year. Be aware that higher elevations can and do get snow though.

Good story. You got me. I needed that after the stress of today. My service route truck had to go to shop, because the power steering pump bracket broke this morning at 6:20ish. That caused me to have to reschedule my jobs for the day. Then, I get a call from my mom early morning and she sounds lethargic. My sister calls me to discuss her early morning wake up call from out mom. Same story as mine. Now mom is at the hospital mad at us . She has the flu, is dehydrated and possibly a mild stroke. So I got a good laugh out of your story. Thank you.
