18 years of inflation adds up.

I think 1st gens will be solidly in the 15-20k range in a couple years, but considering the mileage on that one, I think it's overpriced now.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

165K is pretty much low mileage for an 18 year old truck.... that's less than 10,000 miles per year. And it's a Tacoma, with a 3.4.
    165K is barely broke in.

Depending on the location, 18K is at, or below, market value. As stated before, and I'll say it again, that truck would have EASILY already sold here in CA at that asking price. Obviously OP would like to pay less for an 18 year old truck. And I think he was offered solid advise in making an offer and explaining he is just trying to get started with the truck. As long it is handled well, there's a shot the dealer will come down. Worst thing that can happen is they say no... in which case, who cares, move along, nothing lost.

The only way to know if they would make a good profit is to know how much they bought it for. Often times, when a small dealer has a vehicle priced where it's not moving is due to the fact they paid too much for it, and don't fully understand carrying costs add up just as fast as coming down, to move a vehicle, to get something new in that spot.

They could literally be at their break even at 18K. Who knows... (none of that is to say anyone else is responsible to pay them asking to fix their bad financial decision though lol)

Then each dealer is going to be different.

In the last few years things are vastly different.

I have a good friend that is a very successful used vehicle dealer for 30 plus years .

Most vehicles start with around a $5000.00 mark up from cost. I have seen the paper work often and gone along to drive vehicles back from auctions .

    That was my basis .

    no even a supercharger? pfffsshshshseifhbihfabf

I mean, someone might very much buy it for that price. I wouldn't let mine go for that amount so I guess its hard to say what is too much. Outside of it possibly having serious issues that would cause forever headaches, like a completely rusted out or bent frame, neglected engine, etc. People are willing to pay whatever they are willing to pay.

Not to mention, here you are asking a lot of people who probably wouldn't ever sell theirs, and most of us would buy another one, so we all typically want cheap prices because we want more and don't care about what we could sell them for because we have no plan to get rid of them, ever.

    At least that's my 2c

It's clean but hasn't been meticulously maintained. Also, the crew cab 4x4 seems to be one of the rarer options available. Usually you see crew cab in prerunner form. If you buy it and maintain it well then it won't lose value. I bought mine for 3k more but I was willing to pay extra for the mint frame. I also have no intention of ever selling it so I believe you pay for condition when buying first gens. I'd buy it and elbow grease it til it was mint condition.

If the frame is is great condition meaning little to no rust. I’d pay 15k cash. I put 425k on my 02, so from a mileage standpoint it’s barely broken in if it was maintained correctly.

I looked up the NADA value on my 98. MSRP back in 98 was around $19,800. Nada retail value is at $19,300. lol Holy shit. Then there is KBB. $4600 or so. A while ago I said what the hey and posted on my local FB marketplace for 14K. I did it to get to the trolls. "I just sold one for 6000." "It's not worth that much" "Are you crazy?" haha It sure weeds out the people who need a better job ;)

Hold out for a private listing. Going to a dealer will cost you at least a few grand minimum. I was in a similar position looking at rusty Tacomas for $13-14k (Wisconsin/Illinois). Hold out for something decent below $10k. It's out there. I found a rusty, but replaced frame, Tacoma for $6500. Just takes vigilance. Then again you might just have money to burn...

Please share the listings to have a Tacoma shipped to him for less than $10k because it sounds like OP would be all over that.

Idk what shipping rates are... I'd assume a couple grand?
Plenty of tacos out here around 10k though. 12 grand is definitely under 18..
