I have a well, a water treatment system that removes hardness, iron, and Sulphur. When I went away on a 2 week trip over the summer and came back, all my dishes came put of the dishwasher dirty. My clothes came out with what looked like soap still in them. Water was tested, all was good there. Guy said run your hot water for like an hour and I bet you'll be OK. I did and it was fine in a few days.

Fast forward from July to today, and that shit is happening again. So I am draining my hot water tank k, which is only 2 years old, and the water was milky for a bit, then I saw flakes of crap coming out.

I'm thinking the origiwater system I went with just is a pos from Kinetico.

Only thing I can think to do is replace the water treatment system with something else.

Anyone ever encounter this? Again, I have a well, not city water.
    Sediment isn't hard, very chalky.

Has anything happened that might have caused a change in your water table ?

Higher or lower things might have changed enough to overwhelm your system

I have had well water my whole life but when traveling.

When was your water treatment system last serviced?? Filters clog water gets bypassed around them.

Not knowing just how your treatment system is set up It is just guess.

Do you notice any change in taste??

Was the water test a full spectrum test or just for bacteria ?

What your showing from the picture looks like the result of hard water.

Best of luck! I know your frustration .

I was wondering if systems still used Salt pellets.

That was tech from the sixties.

Still has salt in the softener tub, I'm leaning more towards a problem w the system. But I'm collecting water to have tested.

No other changes to anything, water tastes fine, I haven't grown a third arm or anything .

Last time it was tested, I was told there could be an issue w one part of the system. But, also I was told I could have issues because I live in a bigger home, alone, and don't use the water enough to keep things from getting crummy, which does make sense to me.

Maybe I just need to start running the washing machine on the biggest setting a few times a week?

Yes, they use a brine solution to rinse beads in cylinders.

Well, the more that drains, I turn the cold water on and off to mix up the tanks remaining water, I see less and less crud come out. Thanks for the replies, still sorta stumped, but will make a call tomorrow. It's always something!

Make sure its not washedout below and a crust holding up the salt. If that makes sense. Sometimes they also have a wash cycle that can be manually done depending on the unit.

Do you have a sediment pre-filter before the softner? If so then check that for the same looking chalky crap.

I'm fairly new to wells but I've noticed that I have to flush my water heater twice a year and change the prefilter every 2-3 months instead of the recommended 6 month intervals. If I wait too long I get red iron buildup in the water heater and the prefilter will look like it's been dunked in red mud.

Yeah, I have the water having all the Red iron , Sulphur and other crap taken out of the water before it goes through the salt. Getting the water tested tomorrow.

We'll! I just got back from having my water tested. Looks like the softener isn't working, so Monday it's all being checked and I'll most likely have to spend money I don't have to fix it. Yay!

    Yeah.
At a previous home we had hard water from the city. We had a sediment filter and a carbon filter installed before the water softener -- apparently the chlorine that gets added to the city water supply will deteriorate the resin beads in the softener, so the ion exchange with the salt no longer works (we had a low-pressure dosing septic system, so we used potassium rather than salt). The carbon filter helps remove the chlorine and other chemicals. Not sure what your treatment system does, but you may just need new resin beads.

We started with an expensive digital Hague system that sprung a leak within a week, so we had them come get it. Did some research and just went with a simple system that was a third of the cost and perfectly reliable. It's conceptually pretty simple - mechanical (particle filter) and chemical (carbon filter) filtration, then ion exchange to replace minerals with salt/potassium.
