    Sooo, now I have solar, been thinking about heat pump to take advantage of that and reduce my oil usage (at $5/gal!). Anyone have experience with a heat pump for heating and cooling? How well do they work / etc?

    Running the van in for a oil change this morning. Gathering supplies this afternoon,staying awake as long as possible tonight ,sleeping as much as possible tomorrow. Then take a little 1200ish mile aroma filled drive with cats talking the whole wayo_O It’s no wonder I’m a little off!

    I’m not sure how they are today but we had one years ago and it would bring the temperature up just fine. But it always felt cool in the house even though the thermostat said otherwise.

    Early on we owned a home that had a heat pump with backup electric furnace. Coolin in late spring through early fall was awesome. Heat wasn’t bad in the fall and spring. In the winter though it would regularly frost up and have to go through a defrost cycle. Then the backup furnace would kick in. We have a larger split level home now with a gas furnace and a heat pump for cooling only. Marty is correct in that forced air heating doesn’t really absorb into structure of the home so it always feels a little drafty. One reason I love having a wood stove especially in the winter.

    Heat pumps have a limited outside temperature range where they work efficiently. I’m sure the AC will work fine for you, but I don’t know if the heat will be able to deal with NH winters. I’ve got a natural gas furnace and love it fwiw (not sure how natural gas compares to heating oil price wise).
