I have an issue that I can't wrap my head around. I work as a corner marshall/flagger at Virginia International Raceway in Alton, Va. During lunch, I often eat in my truck and have been known to nap a bit. There is no problem if I leave the truck running for AC or heat, but when I sit in the seat with the key out of the ignition and nothing on, the battery dies and I have to use my jump box. It fires right up with no problem starting until I sit for a while with the ignition off at VIR. I'm beginning to think there maybe some electro magnetic force field down there.
Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated.

So, if the truck sits in your driveway/garage at home overnight, it's fine, starts okay in the morning, but when you're sitting in it at the raceway, the battery drains in what period of time?

Right. If I sit in the truck for 15-20 minutes. it's dead. Hasn't happened anywhere else although I don't sit in the truck unless I'm at work.

Do you leave your headlight switch on?

One guess is that you start your truck to eat and run the A/C, then when you shut it off to nap, the headlights stay on for EDIT: FOREVER UNTIL YOU OPEN THE DRIVER DOOR ~~~30+ minutes~~~ because you don't open the door.

Am I right? What do I win?

Lights shouldn't stay on for 30 minutes with the key out of the ignition, and even if they did, the battery should be able to handle that unless it's failing.

OP: How old is the battery, and do you have OE heated seats?

That could well be it! I thought the headlights were on some kind of timer but if they stay on, that could drain the battery. I'm working this weekend and will check it out.
    Thanks

If the headlight switch is on when the key is turned off they will stay on until the driver's door is opened, they have no time-out.

The battery was new when I purchased the truck two years ago. Probably a cheap battert though.

I like @Dm93 's idea; I wasn't aware that the headlights would stay on indefinitely. Failing that, I would look for a parasitic draw in the heated seats, only because that's the only thing that uses power that would be affected by you sitting in the seat (that I can think of).

I thought of the heated seats too but didn't thing it would draw the battery down that quickly. I'm going to try the headlights Friday when I work again and will let everyone know.

I agree that it is probably the headlights. For the next nap try opening and closing the door beforehand. By the way, VIR is great and the flaggers provide a super important service. I used to do a track weekend twice a year on the full course there, so much fun

Thanks and I'll door the door thing. I retired from the gasoline/fuel oil/propane industry so nothing in my background qualified me for it but I really enjoy it and do feel that we help keep the drivers safe. Come on back!

Many thanks to everyone especially Jason Lee! I worked 3 days last week with no battery issues. Thanks again!
