I have started to experience this weird symptom where any letting up or pressing down on the gas pedal will cause an abrupt jerk. I've now had it happen at a range of speeds and gears (manual transmission). It comes and goes. If I toss the truck into neutral for a second and back into gear this typically resolves the issue. It might then come back depending upon the length of the drive. This has been happening more frequently over the past few weeks. It seems like it has to be something with the transmission but I'm pretty clueless overall. The clutch has always felt good and responsive. I will say that I can feel this transmission much more in the pedal and shifter than any other stick car I've had before, but I don't have another manual 2002 tacoma to compare it to.

What’s the condition of your throttle cable? If it’s getting rough it could be snagging inside the jacket and not moving freely or smoothly. I’d start by setting up your phone to record, pointed at your throttle cable and fully depress the gas pedal a few times with your foot - engine off. See what the footage looks like after. Cable moving smoothly or not..? Go from there.

After the physical cable check- I'd be looking at the TPS.

Yes. Could be triggering false WOT causing a gear shift and/or timing change

I went out and checked the cable as @MalinoisDad suggested and it seemed to be working just fine.

I also disconnected, sprayed some MAF cleaner in the TPS connectors and made sure it was seated and clicked in place.

    I'll check back.

I think my TPS sensor must have been coming loose. After reseating it back in October I haven't experienced this symptom. Thanks.
