Being an 01 his didn't have DOD.

 

Shouldn’t. Afm came out in the 07s

 

What’s DOD? And AFM?

 

Displacement On Demand and Active Fuel Management, it's Chrysler and Gm's cylinder deactivation (introduced around the 07 MY).

The idea is the engine can shut down half it's cylinders during low load cruising to save fuel but in reality the fuel saving are minimal and the lifters on the DOD/AFM cylinders are a source of constant problems.

Ford didn't add it until around 2020 and it's only on the 5.0L as far as I know so the jury is still out on how reliable theirs will be.

I will say this though. They seem to have it worked out on the LT motors. We rented a 2020 Suburban to drive to San Antonio a couple years back. With 5 adults, a baby and enough luggage for everyone for a week. We got 26 MPG at one point and averaged 22 MPG driving across Texas. It blew my mind.

 

Yea if only they could make an AFM lifter that didn't fly apart or get stuck

 

I know right, They did make some changes for 2016 MY that was supposed to correct or make it less prone. My buddies wife had a 2015 Tahoe that ate a lifter at like 100K and we swapped in a junkyard motor out of a wrecked 2016 with 50K on it. so far so good.

 

I had an 08 I put 260k on that never dropped a lifter or had any trans issues. Did have the dreaded o ring failure though.

 

I've seen GM techs doing 21s with only a few k miles on them so I would say that no they aren't fixed. Not to say that every one will fail but they do have a high failure rate and typically give no warning before they go. Same thing with the GM 6L80/90 transmission, when they are done they just stop moving without warning (typically around the 100-150k mark from what we see).

 

No doubt!! It’s awesome when you can reap the benefits with no worries about failures/repairs when those are someone else’s problems.

I also used to get up to 29mpg in my Tahoe when just cruising on flat highways mostly in V4 mode. Then at some point I started getting misfires…

On the latest engines GM now uses “dynamic fuel management” which allows way more firing combinations than just V8, V6, or V4. Now the lifter failures are even worse and frequently happen on new vehicles even before the first oil change.

Thankfully these engines are easy to work on with gobs of aftermarket support, and you can rebuild your top end with non DOD parts. The warranty fix is BS because GM will only replace a faulty lifter with the same part number so it can just fail again…

Yeah do not get an afm/dod engine….unless you’ve seen it run and it’s a steal…than just swap the lifters and put a mild cam in and ur good.

true…true… yeah I remember figuring out all the logistics that first time was a bit of a nightmare. Now changing things later is easy for me since I can now see how it’s laid out and figure out how I want to make it better.
