    Hi All

First off, I've been using this site for the past few years as a guest working on my Fiancé's 2006 Tacoma, it has 165,000 miles on it. The sites been very helpful, just recently replacing all the diff bearings and 1 axle bearing. I was just going to buy a rebuilt carrier, but the turn time was 2-4 weeks and Toyota wanted $3,400! I've been a mechanic for the past 50 years, mostly working on more upscale vehicles, so I figured what the hell I can rebuild a 4 cam Ferrari etc. How tough can it be to do a TACO diff and axle bearing.

My first revelation was the rear axle bearing, yeah, I can fabricate that tool, but chose to purchase one. It went easy peazy. The next weird thing was I bought a kit from Summit racing. came with all the bearings etc. But the Pinion although a Koyo was not the same number as the one, I removed. It was the same dimensionally, externally, internally. BUT the rollers on the bearing were about .250 longer and the race was thinner, hmmm. So, after a few days of wrangling with them and their supplier's tech support, I installed it. Next came the re-assembly, I cranked the pinion nut to 145 ft/lbs., and it still had about .125 movement on the pinion, so I cranked it up to 175 and still a bit. Saw somewhere (think it was Zuk) that sometimes it can go to 200+ Ft/lbs.! I just kept slowly cranking until zero movement, then a toots more for preload. Drag was about 15 in/lbs. on Just the pinion.

Before I took it all apart the Diff locker did not work, but the gear and the fork with the sleeve worked smoothly. So, I'm thinking it's a problem with the actuator. But all in all, the truck is back on the road, no funny noises, smells or LEAKS! Thank you all for your great site. Nick
