My Dad flew a B-24 Liberator heavy bomber in the 5th Air Force, Southwest Pacific Area (New Guinea), 1943.
He ended his tour as squadron commander, due to heavy combat attrition.

My sister has his original patches, so I had to google these:

Mareeba was the location of a 5Th AF base in Queensland, Australia.
I always thought this was an Australian patch, but my search revealed that this was actually a patch from the 403rd Heavy Bombardment Squadron.
How strange that I didn't know that until now.
I'll have to check with my sister, but my Dad's Squadron was either the 402nd, 403rd, or 404th.
    Not sure.

Don't knock it till you try it. Think comfort, not style. House shoes.

Found some more stuff that I didn't know.
It's funny, my Dad wasn't reluctant to talk about the War... not at all.
He would tell stories when asked and he was in the mood (which wasn't always).
But I never asked him about that patch, or if I did, I forgot his answer. :notsure:

"They gained their grizzly cognomen from an incident that happened while they were based at Mareeba, Australia.
The story goes, that the 43rd Bomb Group, in conjunction with the old 19th Bomb Group, allowed a few of their bombs to stray into a Geisha-girl house while on a mission over Rabaul. The damage to the darlings of the Japanese soldiers according to Madam Tojo of Radio Tokyo fame, was a little more than devastating, and she swore vengeance on the 'butchers' of her 'innocent girls'. The 403rd Squadron of the 43rd Group, because several of their crews had figured in the bombing, took an almost malicious delight in the attention they received, and they adopted the name, 'Mareeba Butchers'. Since then the 'Butchers' have laid down their bombs on targets from Lao to Davao. So well they have done their job, Madame Tojo continues to threaten them at frequent intervals, on her radio program, and the 'Butchers' accept each threat as an additional incentive to live up to their name, and put their bombs where they will do the most good."

[edit] I think "Lao" in the text above must be a typo, and should read "Lae".
Lae was a Japanese Air Force base on New Guinea.

Who cares if it's in or not, they're ugly, so not in. It is a function thing, comfort. Your feet will say thank you when you're home.
