My back passenger brake keeps locking up and then it well unlock and it only happens now and then but becoming more frequent. When I applied the brake gently for the first time its like I slammed on them and I come to a sudden stop. I just took them apart and didn't see anything weird and clean them up a bit and adjusted the top spinning piece back a little bit. Was driving home and tested them on ice and I push the brake slightly and then released it and the back passenger wheel was locked up.

Also dose anyone know what this piece is in the photo and what's its for? Looks like its part of the brake system.

    Reserected from the dead.
I believe that is connected to the potportioning valve.

As you load up the bed with heavy items, the bed squats and makes the arm adjust the P. Valve so more braking can take place do you can stop better.

Quite possible you have some gear oil on your brake shoes causing the sudden grabbing .

Leaky seal or blocked differential vent pushing fluid out.

You can try cleaning but it might be time to just go with a rear brake overhaul.

    Good Luck

And if you decide to overhaul your drum brakes you should consider using Genuine Toyota Parts rather than some off-the-wall crap that works for a while but that also very possibly will lead to other niggly problems.

I am all for using OEM where it matters but brake pads, shoes, drums and discs are not one of them. Don’t buy into this.

Try aftermarket for yourself and see what the data tells you rather than merely parroting what others have said.

If any of this ⬆️ was the case would there be signs of leakage? It looks really good in side and clean it up and just put new solenoids and bled all brakes. And its Still happening.

You could try looking at the brake dust from the shoes and see if it looks normal. Several years ago I had a failed seal right after changing rear brake shoes. Being a fool, I decided to clean up the new shoes and keep using them rather than replacing them with new. It took about a year before I had issues but the oil that got on them must have started to break them down because instead of getting brake dust from them wearing, I was getting little rolls of material, just like you get from using an old pencil eraser on paper.

You may be able to swap the left and right shoes to see if the problem changes side? Other causes of sticking brakes can also be debris in the line. This may be possible if you just did some work back there...

I think the BPV feeds both sides of the rear axle (single line to the axle where it then tee's to both side) so if only the passenger side is sticking the BPV probably isn't the issue.

Yes any gear oil would be quite easy to see.

Another thought now the a gear oil leak is off list.

Blocked left brake line plus a failed or not adjusted LSPV allowing full brake pressure to the right side brake.

Yes. People remove the LSPV and replace them with a manual valve. Now the real question is, and what the others were driving towards. Is the valve the issue, or is there some other issue at play. I would disconnect the arm (from the axle) and push it all the way up. this would open the valve as much as possible and then go (carefully) drive around. or vise versa. That would tell if you if the valve is an issue, or if you have something else to look for. My guess is the latter.

No brake expert but what did the brake cylinder look like on the passenger wheel when you cleaned things up? Have had one on a old chevy truck stick and do that before, intermittent wheel lock up when applying brakes. Rebuilt and fixed.
