It sounds like this is a common issue with tacomas in winter.../shrugs...

Not sure how water would have gotten in... I have never had this happen in winter before...

Since you reversed the lines instead of vacuum , you were creating boost.

Most catch cans have a honeycomb mesh or steel wool separating the inlet and outlet. As the crankcase gas passes through the mesh or steel wool, it slows down and separates the oil from the air. The oil droplets then drip down into the reservior portion of the catch can. As long as the mesh or steel wool is above the reservoir, the catch can will work more or less the same regardless of which port is inlet vs. exhaust.

The residue under the cap is normal, as @vicali linked.

^^^ This - the mesh should be on the firewall side of the orientation. Simple fix if you reversed the fixed connection setup.

You're absolutely right. I should have know TW would choose coddling over encouraging OP to rub a few brain cells together.

Since the empty nonfunctioning catch can didn't hurt your engine. Do you still think you need the catch can?

    Asking for a friend.

The 3.5 produces an assload of blow-by. The ccv pukes up like a mother, too.

It’s definitely worth it installing a catch can for both.

Is this speaking as someone who doesn't have a catch can?

I did my oil yesterday and pulled my catch can it wasn't "nothing" in the bottom of the can.

I was suggesting he was checking too soon.

It’s as a tech we check blow by from time to time, the new four cylinders actually have a recall where you check PCv operation. You can feel and see the blow by. The throttle plate is a good visual indicator, the v6 never gets nearly as dirty as the other engines.

All engines have it, but I’ve always found Toyota v6s to have the least. I’ve only seen a couple with ring issues/ excessive.
