@alberttang Putting on the bulb seal is important. Making 45 degree cuts at the corners, but also having it out to the sides far enough. That is why I've done it twice. F'd the placement of the bulb seal the first time to far to the middle of the base. It needs to go to the outside more. Hit up Josh or Ben at SP, they have a short video of it.

FYI, these drip rails are on a little sale for black Friday. Pretty pricey, but nicely made, and solves a particularly annoying issue for me. I'm sure I could have fab'd something myself eventually, but just haven't found the time or willpower to do it myself.

Nice, though my 1st gen doesn't have drip rails, so would eventually end up in the same place. Yeah, nice product, a bit spendy.

 

you likely need to adjust the latch bolt inside. mine moves a bit and have a similar issue on mine. Do you have the old style or the solid U? Mine come out of adjustment a bunch.

 

Does anyone have a good guide or video on how to install an awning onto the SP ? I recently ordered the freespirit 270 awning and am struggling to find the best way to mount it with 1-2 people using the SP awning brackets.

 

I used 3 brackets for my awning, and it's a plain Ole one sided awning. I installed mine right after the camper was put on, at SPs shop. I needed one guy to help me, that's it.

 

I also used 3 SP brackets and got my buddy to help. Used straps to hold it in place or close enough to put it into place and bolt it in. using straps really helps. You can either mount the awning to the brackets or install the brackets on the X1 and then mount the awning to the brackets. either way, use straps to hold it up.

 

Not sure which version I have but the latch / mechanism starts to seize up a bit over time. A squirt of Boeshield T9 makes everything right in the world again and I can open one handed.

 

I installed mine solo. Not a 270 but an 8x8 ft ARB awning that was still plenty heavy. I bought 3 brackets and bolted them up. Then hung each end of the awning from a bracket using a nylon webbing strap. Then started installing bolts through the mounting brackets into the awning on one end, then the other. Leave them a bit loose so there is some play until both sides are bolted on, then tighten and bolt up the middle. Made it pretty easy actually.

 

Who's got a white 2nd gen access cab with a SP here in Az right now? Out to dinner with family and just drove past it in the parking lot.. first one I've seen around here.

 

Just picked up my camper last Tuesday! Really excited! Although, seeing some of the complaints with the 2nd gens I’m now kind of worried I might have bought into a bunch of problems. I guess I’ll just have to hope the version 3 mounts solve the issue.

 

Has anyone run a tailgate pad with the X1? Are the door pistons strong enough to hold the back hatch open while carrying bikes on a tailgate pad?

 

I have for some local shuttles. No issue with the rear hatch but it's a PITA to get bikes over the tailgate with the camper on (I have a cabinet taking up 40% of the bed width). I don't think I'd want to drive long freeway distances with the hatch open.

 

@BobWithOneO Hey Bob, I have had my X1 for over a year with many miles and trips on it, on FS roads, 4x4 roads, 4/40 roads, etc.. I haven't had any big issues that I didn't cause myself. There's a little dust and water intrusion, like after yesterdays rainfall and I need to seal up some spots in the front R & L of where the X1 sits on the bed rail. There was some leakage through the door locks and I took those off and sealed them with silicon and they are dry now. The shell clamps for the 2nd Gen are not the greatest and SP has a fix for this. I have 3 of the old ones on each side, but I also installed these up front on each side to just hold it in place better. I also installed up front a stop that slips up under the lip of the X1 and it stops the forward movement.

 

Yeah, I would only do it for shuttling. Think it would be fine for rough FS road shuttles?

I used to have a mid-height Yakima Rack which I occasionally used the tailgate pad and it was a tight fit and PITA to load/unload. I'm hoping the X1 should be easier than that since it's higher.

 

@Taco-Surfer Did you install that front piece after the camper was installed? Were you able to get it in there without lifting the shell? I don’t aggressively wheel my truck but I do go down some pretty rough roads and would like it to be as secure as possible.

 

I wouldnt worry or put too much thought into it. Its not across the board for 2nd gens.. just depends on usage. If you can get a support underneath the front lip, it will definitely help. I made my front support bar prior to install (I knew I would need it based on my driving habits and use of the truck) and have yet to have any shifting issues. I see some movement at the clamps (where they have scratched the PC off the X1 lip), but we're talking maybe 1/8" of most total.. and that's with beating it down washes, dunes, rough trails, etc. I get more issues with my gear inside the camper than anything. My thin, upright, 13g water tank slaps the X1 molle panels/front lip when really getting after it in washes and stuff. The camper itself is solid and hasnt moved or made contact with my Prinsu rack etc. I thought the slapping sound was the overhang hitting my Prinsu rack when I was bombing washes.. but its the tank. Just has a little play/leverage and gets to moving/slapping when the bucking really kicks in. lol

 

Ok, that makes me feel better. I was really starting to worry. I think I’ll mark where it’s sitting right now and keep checking it periodically. Hopefully the V3 mounts will help. They certainly look better than the pictures of the original clamps.

 

I would honestly just rock the regular clamps, and then add some reinforcement straps like @Taco-Surfer
