I've scoured Google, Youtube, other forums as well as TW looking for an install tutorial for a Compustar remote start system for a 3rd Gen push-to-start Tacoma without any luck. Everything seems to be a plug and play kit that uses the factory key fob. The range on these unfortunately aren't sufficient for what I want/need. I was more than happy with my 1-way system that I installed on my 2011 Taco. I could start my truck from the top of the ski hill or across the street in a parking garage if I wanted to. I'm not interested in phone apps or anything like that. Just a 1-way remote system or possibly 2-way if the price is right. I'm not going to ask if they'll shut off when you open the door. Lol. I'm a heavy duty mechanic by trade and confident in doing this mod. I just want a simple how-to or schematic before I buy the kit as a lot of electronics aren't returnable. Any intel would be helpful. Thanks!

You can equip the N2 Designs remote start with a long-range remote. Check out their website.

I did this for the exact reason and situation. Where I ski I can't rely on cell coverage. Works great.

Thanks for the input guys. Which long range remote do you use?

Bought the N2 designs with long range antenna. To get maximum range, I ran the antenna up to the lower left corner of winshield on dash. The receiver for the antenna is about the size of a matchbook and the wires are easy to tuck out of sight. I had the antenna buried under the dash at first and it didn't work great. Moving it to the dash solved everything.

N2 Designs has some of the best customer service out there. You may find a little cheaper, but if you need assistance they will make sure things work out right. Very satisfied customer.

I agree with all you said. Wire is easy to hide the range is great. Was a pretty quick install. Super happy with it and for my SR it gave me a key fob to unlock and lock. Was going crazy with just a key and driver side lock

So with the N2 option and their long range remote, it looks like it’s going to be close to $400 USD. By the time it gets to Canada, it’ll be $600 CAD plus any duty that customs wants to throw at it.

This is why I’d like to go with the Compustar option. Like I said, I was super happy with the system I put in my old truck and it’ll only cost me about $250 CAD if I install it myself. If anyone can help me with that, it would be appreciated. If not, I think it’s schematic and multimeter time. Maybe I’ll post a tutorial? Thanks again.

As I stated above, I can do it for about $250 CAD depending on the Compustar kit I order, if I install it myself. Which is about what it cost me when I put one in my 2011. Either way, it’s half the price with for a reputable long range remote start that will work just fine. Please refer to the original post before clogging up this thread. I’m glad you like your N2 system.
