I'm sure you can. The question was why do people go to dealerships and the answer is some are not competent or they do not want to.

No the r/d is usually on passenger side firewall. Looks like a tall black can with piped lines coming off of it.

I changed my oil and oil filter, but I've been checking my oil catch can and emptying it into this bottle since my last oil change (about 5,300 mi. ago). It's about 131 grams of oil, or by my rough calcs, about 3% of the 5.5 quarts we put in.

It's just interesting to see how much I collected and prevented from being burned up in combustion. I'm not supercharged.

Then what do you have a catch can for lol? Please don’t answer, rhetorical question…
If you were in a cold climate you’d collect a lot more

No doubt, and if some hack (and there are plenty) screws up yo' shiz, the shop you're paying to fix it right, better ve making it right. If you're that hack, then you're also that one paying.

Not that replacing an A/C line is rocket surgery or terribly prone to collateral damage... but then again if you screw it up & break another line, getting it properly evac'd & recharged a 2nd time, or buying the part you broke too, is eating into your savings.

I'd tend to agree that a person asking "what is this?" [Points at liquid line] might not want to jump right into DIY there. I do my own A/C work... I also have buddies with evac machines I can use for a 6 pack, have my own manifold, and have a decent knowledge of what I do know... and equally importantly what I don't know.

Done by me: decals, plastidip, and vinyl. More to come. Not done by me: Icon front/rear suspension; Total Chaos UCA’s; Method wheels/34” Falken tires; Prinsu cab rack/LED light bar; V1Air compressor piped to a 2.5 gallon underbed tank; Pelfreybilt front/rear bumpers; Smittybilt front winch.
Don’t have a picture, which is a major injustice considering Deric @EasyDoesIt provided some amazing customer service after I screwed up on the initial install, but got my DDI seat jackers and panel installed and it already seems like it’s going to feel great. Deric, thanks so much for the help!!!

Also installed the @BuiltRight Industries Molle panels in the bedsides, which led me to find out the storage pocket had been flipped when the previous owner installed the V1Air compressor . These things are nice and beefy, and I look forward to using them, but I do wish it was the full length of the long bed, even if I’d have had to do some Riv-Nuts to tie it in up front. 06DA71EE-188D-4547-9A83-F8F30F8BDA7B.jpg250FAA88-29FA-4996-AF83-6AB146177B31.jpg

Does anyone else notice that their "vacation" time ends up being "work on your truck" time? No? Just me?

Fixed my RCI cat guard rattling against the driver's side secondary cat:

@EatSleepTacos hooked me up with some repairs and reinforcements for my LCA cam tabs:

Did a bit of rust prevention for my ARB bumper:

Desecrated a brand new Prinsu roof rack with power tools:

I added an extra leaf in the back, hence a higher rear.

I run a catch can on my stock motor and check on it once every few months. good piece of mind especially when i see the gunk that was tapped from going back into my motor.

Just my opinion. I never was big on catch cans on non turbo engines. Port injection is not as critical as direct injection. There is nothing wrong with catch cans and they do provide a way to catch some of the blowby. Port injection engines are designed with the pcv to "naturally" burn off the minor amount of contaminents. My Ford turbo GDI is a direct injection engine that is more easily harmed by blowby and can coat the turbo with the blowby. Based on the number of 4.0 Tacoma engines reaching 300k to 400k miles, without a catch can, I feel comfortable in not using a catch can. My Ford turbo, on the other hand, has 70k miles and I need to add a catch can or sell the vehicle soon before the accumulated blowby causes major issues. FWIW we have a 2001 diesel turbo Ford Excursion in the family with well over 300k miles and no catch can.

Don’t need to sell the Ford, look into walnut blasting. I’ve had it done on an N54 a few years ago. Made a big difference. That one had a catch can, but still gunked up the intake valves. And I just did it myself on our newish Tahoe (no turbo but GSI); it’s actually pretty easy, just gotta keep rotating the engine so all the valves are closed and keep a shop vac handy to keep the mess down. No can on the Tahoe. They only delay the inevitable, some are better than others.

that said, I agree with you, zero reason to run a can on non turbo port injection motors. Not that it hurts either, just useless.
