    Hi Everyone,
I’m new to Tacomas and looking to purchase 2 gen or maybe a 3rd gen.
Will start looking at 2gen first.
What would be the best trim level to look at that won’t restrict me on lift kits? Looking at 3-4” lift. Is there any models or trim levels that I should stay way from?

    Thanks

The 05-08 Off-road trucks kind of suck until they are locked. Unless it’s locked. The rear diff is fully open.

Personally I like the 13-15 model Off-road. But the SR5 and Sport are very capable off-road too.

If you're strictly looking at options for lift kits, all 6 lug Tacoma's are essentially the same in that regard. So all 4x4 and Prerunner models are compatible with each other (leaving lift spindles out).

If you're looking at other features, offroads come with rear locking differentials, sports come with hood scoops and color matched trim bits. Older sport models had a mechanical lsd in the rear end.

I’m trying to find one on the end of the 2gen as you mentioned, but they are hard to find here where I live. There is a 2010 base 4x4 right now. Does the sport have any factory suspension upgrades that is added that could hinder future suspension upgrades? I would love to find an off-road.

The off-road doesn’t come with hood scoop?

No. The sport has a bigger diameter sway bar. But it won’t hurt suspension or lift. Most remove the sway bar.

No. It does not. Only the Sport has a scoop.

Thanks so far for the info guys. It’s helping me determine which trim level to seek out.
I like the off-road for its lockers and love the looks of the hood scoop on the sport.
I’m not sure what the SR5 and base offers.

You're not going to put 4 inch lift on a 4x4 unless you do a drop bracket lift and cut out the cross member.

    Thanks
