It’s definitely AC compressor issue. Here’s the work up on it. They said 2 days to fix it (and yes they have to pull the dash. Here’s hoping it doesn’t rattle for the rest of eternity).

Those dashs come apart and go back together easy. Toyota uses lots of clips to hold everything together. I have had a few out, and no rattle issues after.

Good to hear! I haven’t had a ton of good experiences at this dealer so I’m gun shy.

When I bought my 2016 4Runner the repair and service department kept scratching and gouging the interior and then refusing to take responsibility for it. Every time they worked on it they damaged something. Now I take a video of my rig before bringing it to them.

I dont understand techs doing stuff like that...but taking a video and having the service writer sit in the truck with you and note it on the RO thats theres no scratches on any interior component is a good idea

    LS1 swap with nitros.
Had to replace the evap core on my ‘16 a few months ago as it was leaking 1234. Was around a $2k repair and truck had to go back 3 times for them to fix other issues like missing bolts and scratched dash. Only time the truck has been to any service place since bought new. Be persistent on the repairs especially the little details.

Sorry to hear the evaporator crap out on you, it’s a bummer.

Under warranty you can take it to any TOYOTA dealer, not just the one you bought it from, preferably one with good reviews if you have such choices.

It’s not hard to damage any evaporator. I learned the hard way not to touch the evaporator lines coming out the firewall, not even for cleaning.
Just a little firm tug and it maybe all over. It's a weak point on them as they are brazed to the coil there. I dread going to any shop as they may accidentally tug and damage them and it may not show up until later.

    Cheers!

This new R1234YF refrigerant they're running is corrosive. It's not uncommon for this stuff to eat through the AC system seals. I've seen alot of R1234 systems fail over the past 3 years and it's not cheap to recharge either. My own Tacoma condenser sprung a slow leak around 12k miles and lost all charge by 26k miles, 44 months from the month that it was built.

 You know what I mean. Tell them they should, suggest, etc. Or you could take them to court if you really wanted to and could prove damage. Ever run a compressor with no oil ? I wouldn't want a new vehicle with that possibility. Want to run an engine with no oil, a tranny with no fluid, a water pump with no water ???

    Or better yet https://auto.howstuffworks.com/automotive-air-conditioning.htm
if we want to be picky on play of wording in answer to your question.

Dealer fixed it under warranty. Here’s the work order and a photo of it. Guess it was just a fluke!

That's sucks but at least it was all under warranty. Thanks for the update.

I don't see any oil charged out on that repair order.......all that oil that leaked out should have been replenished. Your compressor is basically a little pump that needs oil just like your engine needs oil. I would question why they didn't add oil.... and if the evaporator just happens to come with a small container of oil it probably isn't enough because so much went out the drain tube.

It’s under warranty I would ask anything as long as it’s all working good . They probably forgot to add it in the work order is my guess
