Trailer Plug Relocation

Great Idea about the License Plate Hinge. I wonder however, if that adapter would protrude to much to do that? I get my new bumper sometime late this week or early next week so I can measure it all out see if it would work out.

 

@Bobcdn - I got the adapter in and I am thinking it is just to bulky for what you and I want, unless you don't care how much it sticks out? It would stick out about 2 inches from what I can tell. Check out the pictures I took. Also, I was able to take the old adapter apart but from the looks of it this wont be a plug and play type of thing. I am thinking that extra harness I put into our conversation is needed if you do go with that one.

 

@Bobcdn - I finally got in my rear bumper in along with the adapter and connector. I ended up returning the first adapter I got because it was way to thick for what I was wanting. Found a cheaper alternative that would work with the connector I had originally purchased (I linked both below). The adapter did not come with hardware which is fine because usually the hardware sent is silver in color, so I just went out to Lowe's and bought black hex head bolts, lock washers, washers and nuts (included pics of the size I used).

For creating the hole for this connector in the bumper you will need a 2" hole saw if you don't already have one. Something to note, all but one of the wire colors matched up for an easy install. The only one that did not match was the black but by process of elimination you end up ok. For some reason the connector wire color that you'd hook up with the black was purple. All the others matched up correctly.

I didn't have a way to test to make sure all was hooked up correctly so I called Autozone and O'Reilly's but they didn't have any kind of tester either. So I might stop by an RV store to see if they might have something I can use really quick to ensure what I did was mistake free and all is working as it should. I left enough wiring down there in case I need to modify it again in the future.

Another thing to mention, I do have LED lights in those license plate lamps. I chose to install this a little closer to the license plate rather that centered between the light and the plate. I did this so that the light will illuminate that area nicely in the event I am hooking up in the dark, no flashlight needed.

Finally got around to changing and relocating the trailer plug.
Very easy install and I didn't run into any issues.

I used the Endurance Hopkins 40950 Multi-Tow 7 Blade and 4 Flat Vehicle Wiring Kit:

Why can't anything just match up...
The new Hopkins plug is wired the SAE Standard way and my Taco is wired the RV Standard way.
That's why some of the colours are mismatched.



I created a template for the Hopkins trailer plug. See the attachment.
Make sure you print it to "actual size" in your printing settings so it is to actual scale. You can double check by confirming the dimensions on the paper. These dimensions are "true" and I used a caliper to measure the plug.

 

here’s my version I did over the weekend to move the stock 7 pin tow harness. I modified the original harness to go from the Toyota 7 pin plug to the OE style. Now it’s a 7/4 pin 3rd gen style plug behind the license plate on a sprung plate holder and out of harms way underneath. I figure if I’m trailering my plate isn’t visible anyway. I used an OE 7 pin splitter because I have a second 7 pin plug in the passenger storagecubby next to the 120v plug for the camper.

 

OK, so how do I connect to this? I'm trying to do this mod but DO NOT want to cut/splice. Is there an adapter harness that lets you plug into the connector pictured in @TheTrooper post above and then into the back of an aftermarket trailer wiring 7 pin connector?

 

Not to my knowledge, otherwise I wasted about an hour of my life. I only modified it to have two available OE connectors at once for the truck camper and the trailer. Your best bet with no splicing would be to reuse the hanging 7 and simply relocate it to the bumper...if its any consolation the tow harness is removable and makes splicing much easier on a workbench.

 

Yeah, I've removed it already, so no consolation there. I'm perfectly happy to remove whatever needed, I just don't want stupid splice connectors. And I don't want to reuse the existing connector because I want to upgrade to a 7/4 pin multi-tow connector.

 

I hear ya, I staggered the connections to mitigate the bulk then soldered and marine heat shrink on the connections.

 

awesome something new to do on a weekend at home, the hitch plug has always been a concern of mine since getting the truck. and i watched a friend absolutely destroy his plug hanging it up on a rock thought he would hit the hitch first, but hung-up plastic and wires all over the place.
