Rusty, first you talk about old air compressors and get me thinking. Now I’m looking at my old Husky mower and wondering where I can find one of these old tractors to replace it with. You are a bad influencer (I mean that in the best way)

 

We had freezing rain before the snow started. My wife's Highlander is always in AWD so she can make it in the garage. I could only get in with the Tacoma in 4. My kids Elantra didn't stand a chance. Still not sure how we're going to get it in.

 

We often stop there for a cheap meal out, the pizza special (any variety) or hot dog special are both under $3, hot pretzels are around $1 and if you want a desert they have frozen yogurt too.

Ticks all the boxes: quick, cheap and surprisingly good.

If I'm going to keep past tech alive I need to inspire new people to hoard preserve it.

A bit more seriously, it used to be affordable to buy an old car or truck and "fix it up" for a fun project.
The costs of old vehicles has skyrocketed along with the all the post purchase cost too.

Old tractors don't take up much space, there are still decent deals to be found, you don't need giant amounts of tools to work on them, most of the parts are available or can be worked around and in the end you have a far superior machine you can use around the estate. Get searching!

Drum brakes are used because:
1) they work well
2) they are cheap

Self adjuster:
The photo below is the passenger front brake of an old car, when moving in reverse the drum will be turning turn counter clockwise.

1) As the brake is applied the shoes will be pulled in a counter clockwise direction also, moving the rear shoe (left) down and the front (right) shoe up.

2) The self adjuster cable will cause the lever to move up and grab next the tooth on the star wheel.

3) When the brake is released the shoes will be pulled back to the home position by the 3 springs.

4) The lever will rotate the star wheel one tooth as the rear shoe moves back to home.




If you invest around $15-20 you can have all the proper tools, makes the job much easier.



Remember the other side is a mirror image not identical.
The shoe with the shorter lining is called the primary shoe and goes to the front of the vehicle.

 

1) get a nice big vintage air compressor
2) buy a project tractor
3) buy nice air operated tools to work on tractor
4) get a few parts tractors...

Start with a very big garage (preferably separated from house)… your wife/girlfriend (really, you ultimately) will be much happier and less stressed.

Moving just 500' was a royal pain.

 

Remember on our Trucks the use of the Parking brake is what keeps the shoes adjusted.** I answer these questions so often in the 1st generation threads I forgot where I was.

So the parking brake needs to be working and used.

We all have our on style of doing drum brakes .

Thing is they seldom see much use unless your using the truck to haul goodies around.

Looking at the Drum brakes every few years can be quite scary.
