Red LED lamp on lower left of the dash

This sounds really stupid…but as a Taco first-timer, give me some grace. There is a tiny red light on the lower left of the dash, right beside the switch that allows for the rear spotlight that shines over the bed area to be or not to be activated when the door opens. What is its function?

I’ve searched & searched, but cannot find its reason for existence.

 

That sounds aftermarket. My '21 has nothing like that.

Most likely it is a GPS tracker installed by your dealer or a previous dealer. Typically these are required for high risk loans, but not necessarily. Some dealers just install them for fun and pass the charges onto you hoping you won't notice.

Its Uncle Sam watching. You must be on one of their lists... cheating on taxes, ripping tag off a mattress, speeding, posting a wanted ad on here w/o 50 posts, lying on he 2020 census, or worst of all, topping off your truck when the pump clicks off.

 

The DCM (data communication module, a.k.a. data telematics) module in the truck communicates a lot more than LAT/LONG to the mother ship storing data in the Toyota cloud. In case someone hasn't tried it, you can download the Toyota App and get "Driver Technique / Behavior" called Drive Pulse and Trips information, like counts of harsh cornering, braking and acceleration and what trip it occurred on, past trips (start and end). Your route of travel. Your parked location.

Oh and not to make anyone paranoid, but you know those little "SIM cards" in your smartphones? Without effort on your part, in the background, the SIM is kicking off messages to the cellular provider's cloud storage without you doing a thing. Possibly certain info (say text of a text message) gets forwarded based on content.

Resistance is futile.

Pretty rude when someone posts a please help thread then disappears. Should be some kind of ccard deposit that gets charged for that.

 

Because it's not a Toyota part.

Follow the wiring from the lamp and you'll find some kind of magical aftermarket bit that has been added. Odds are you want to carefully remove it, after you figure out what it is.

 

Means your truck is a whore.

 

This light is an indicator that your soul is pure.
When the Lord decides to make his return, everyone with one of these lights will be taken to paradise, a place with unlimited mods at no charge, a tank that *never* goes empty of fuel, tires that never wear, a beer in every cup holder and the ability to wheel straight up the side of a cliff without consequence.
Everyone else will be stuck on a hellish earth, driving ridgelines and smart cars.
