I hear you. ideally, imo, take all teams with the best record in the playoffs, regardless of division. They would probably have to eliminate divisions altogether and just have AFC and NFC to do this.
Just dreaming…

 

Exactly, NFC east has snuck the sub .500 team in before. It’s a strange year, but there are several teams right around .500 battling for 2 spots with 3 games left. Keeps more fan bases paying attention.

 

Just gotta get to the dance and peak. Record doesn’t tell the whole story sometimes when you have key players injured during the season. Get healthy come playoff time and it’s a whole new clean slate.

The 2 #7 seeds last year proved by their playoff performance they shouldn’t have been there… Philadelphia and Pittsburgh

 

Tis the season for teams with weak records to upset teams with good records. A lot of teams are still in the hunt with mediocre standings.

Doesn’t hurt that the Cinati Bengos have a 6-game win streak going…and face the Patriots next week.

 

Too many teams to have even one game against each and then there’s no balance home/away and it becomes even more of a crapshoot. This set up gives precedence to winning a division and still allows the better teams that don’t win a path forward. I don’t see any fixes that don’t break something else.

 

Winning a division does not mean that’s the better team. The better team has a better record. Winning a division with a losing record means you’re the best loser in a losing division.

 

Wild card has been around a long time now. It works. It may not “even out” but it does put emphasis on the regular season, divisional play, and conference record. Tampa is playing badly now and that means all 4 teams still have a legitimate shot at the playoffs. Ask those fans if divisions should be eliminated or if a division winner should not get a home playoff game.

 

Yep, unless there is a division with 4 teams with 3 losses, and they all split against each other for those 3 losses, I think the current setup is fine That would be a cool scenario though

 

Then tie breaker would determine the division winner and the others are wc. If they’re that dominant they’ll play one road game and then duke it out at home fields according to tie breakers. I’m not seeing any reasons to change the status quo.

 

Of course, but it’ll also mean they are undefeated against all other divisions. It’s really the only scenario where it would seem like there’d be an argument

 

Truth re not usually. Though crazy shit can happen. Example, 1998..the AFC East was so tight that the 3 wild cards all went to that div. Granted, the non division winners in the West and Central were 8-8 or worse and the 4 East teams were 9-7 or better, so one can argue that even though that one division dominated that bracket representation it still had the best teams in the conference.

Or, look at 2008. The Patriots missed the playoffs at 11-5, while the Chargers won their division at 8-8 and won one round beating the Colts who on paper were a better team.

Perfect world perhaps, at least in that regard you know the best overall 7 from each conference BY RECORD get in. Then there will probably be sniveling about a weak schedule or something similar.

 

Doesn’t matter, in 10 years everyone will make the playoffs because that’s the most fair and hurts the fewest feelings

 

The teams on the bubble are the only ones with a beef and they aren’t good enough to make it stick. Ending divisional play would have way more negative consequences to the season and rivalries than trading one marginal playoff team for another. Best 7 will always be arguable since there’s always one team that backs it’s way in at the end and others that play great but come up short.

 

And every team gets a #1 seed.
