Is anyone else here familiar with DD Audio out of Oklahoma City? I had a setup in my 4Runner over 6 years ago and it was fantastic.

Fast forward all those years and we now have 2 kids(3yo and 5m) and I have car seats in the back. The OEM setup non-JBL is pretty sad so it’s time to bring some life inside. I can’t go too nuts as I have to be carful of their little ears but want to jam when I’m driving alone.

    Here’s the upcoming setup:

    DC 6X9A - https://ddaudio.com/d-class/component-sets/dc6x9a/ - speakers with tweeter crossover

    D-X 6.5B - https://ddaudio.com/d-class/coaxials/d-x6-5b/ - rear door

    608D 8” Subwoofer - https://ddaudio.com/series/600-series/?status=2&global=2 - I may end up doing a 10” instead but not sure yet

    D5.350 5-channel Amp(4 speaker channel and 1 dedicated sub) - https://ddaudio.com/d-series/multi-channels/d5-350/

I will also have an LC7i and bass knob added as I’m keeping the OEM radio. All-in it’s roughly $2,200 and that’s with $910 alone for installation.

I had a good laugh, I went and got a quote from Car Toys here in town and they quoted OVER $5,000 for a similar setup. No clue where they came up with that number but I was curious their price point.

I’ll keep everyone posted how this setup goes!

that amp is really low powered IMO.
    Continuous Wattage @4ohm: (CH1~4) 85 x 4 / 280 x 2 (CH5) 130 x 1
    Continuous Wattage @2ohm: (CH1~4) 140 x 4 (CH5) 230 x 1
    Continuous Wattage @1ohm: (CH5) 350 x 1

should be at least 300w rms

imo, i really don't think the rear speakers are worth upgrading either

Thank you for the feedback here. If the RMS of each speaker is only 70/75 watts and the sub being 300rms, would you consider this being enough?

I considered not doing the rear speakers but the cost is so cheap to add them.

Also, I’m still learning a lot here.

the rms is good for the main speakers, it's really just low for the sub-- i would prefer to not go less than 300w rms, 500w rms would be ideal. i'd generally recommend a 10 over an 8 as well. 8 is plenty when you've got family with you, but if i'm by myself, i wanna rock out, and an 8 won't cut it for those times :)

i'm not extremely familiar with that brand, so can't comment too much on it. if you like them, that's most important.

just be sure to watch the sub depth. assuming you've got a double cab, max depth is going to be about 5", and there will be concerns with higher-excursion subs like that style hitting the seatback. many take the plastic off the rear of the seat for slightly more clearance, but it's not always enough.

that 8 at 5.75" might fit, but the 10 of that brand will definitely not fit at 6.6".

what box were you planning on running?

So you gave me some cool ideas man. Perhaps I run a 4-channel that gives the RMS power the speakers need and then another mono block dedicated to the sub only.

https://ddaudio.com/rl-sa-la-series/multi-channels/rl-sa300-4/ dedicated 4 channel with close to peak RMS

    https://ddaudio.com/rl-sa-la-series/monoblocks/rl-sa500-1/ dedicated single channel that gives 250rms @4ohm or 390 @2ohm

Both these amps together are less expensive than the 5-channel but probably make up the difference in install price. I want to say thank you for the advice/thoughts but what do you think of that style of setup?

Both boxes are custom but not sure if I should do the 10” or go down to the 8”. I have no use for the space behind the seats so cut away.

yeah, in the end the final price with additional wiring, splitters, and fuses is likely to be just under, or the same as what the 5-channel would be, with a small boost in sub power. difference is going to be packaging. 2 smaller amps can be easier to fit than 1 large amp.

though now that i'm digging through their site more, i should note that my preference is really to have amps that are CEA-certified, which none of those dd amps are. i also don't like what i'm seeing with the jump in power between the 4/2/1 ohm ratings. any outside-certified amp doesn't have the same power jump, which makes me suspicious of how they measure the 'rating', which makes me suspicious of the brand as a whole. it's honestly enough to make me start looking outside that brand. i dunno, something just feels 'off' looking through their amp specs.

    here's an nvx that's CEA certified to 80x4+350x1 @ 4ohms, for $320.
    https://www.sonicelectronix.com/item-158921-NVX-VAD11005.html

or a pioneer that's also CEA certified for to 75x4+350x1@ 4ohms, for $400
    https://www.sonicelectronix.com/item-168999-Pioneer-GM-D9705.html

i personally use alpine pdx v9 amps in my vehicles for similar reasons(100x4, 500x1). they're discontinued, but ebay shows a few listings between $300-600.

as far as the sub, i would definitely recommend 10". it's always easier to turn it down, it's a lot harder to turn it louder!

what brand does the shop use for wiring? just be cautious of CCA type wire--it's not pure copper, and can create numerous heat and connection issues.
