I switched into 4x4 today just fine (while driving slowly), but wasn't thinking about how it worked and switched back to 2wd after I had stopped. When I took off from the light, got a loud clunk. All seems well, switched back and forth between 2 and 4wd after that.
Did the same thing with my Ford years ago and it's fine. Hoping the Tacoma transfer cases and front axles as forgiving as my old Ford. I wasn't sure how much abuse these tolerate.
    Thanks!

It's fine. Sometimes you get a clunk, sometimes you don't hear a thing.

Thanks Chris! It was a fairly loud clunk, and I was kicking myself for forgetting to shift in and out on the fly. I took off very slowly and it surprised me how loud the clunk was.

Both my second gens (2009 and 2014) did it and current 3rd gen does it occasionally, especially disengaging in reverse. Gotta be at the special point it seems.

Thanks! I'm feeling a lot better about it.
It really surprised me, since I babied the pedal and barely moved when I heard the loud clunk.
    Much appreciate the reply!

Yea I'm pretty sure that's when it did it.

In my 2012 2.7lr 4X4 5spd, I found that if I accelerate from a stop, shift into 2nd gear, and switch it to 2wd when I have the clutch still depressed, I get absolutely no clunk at all. But the clunk is pretty common and not harmful.

    Thanks, I appreciate it.
Yeah, just surprised me since all I did was turn the switch back to 2wd at a stop, then take off slowly. I'm used to 4x4's clunking a bit when engaging, less so when disengaging.

It's best done while in motion. If you're at a dead stop the gears in the transfer case have about 50/50 odds that they will be in the right spot to engage or disengage. If they are in the right spot, you get a seamless switch. If not, 4X4 doesn't engage, or disengage until the wheels rotate a partial turn which allows the gears to line up. That is when you hear an audible clunk as it engages or disengages.
