Magnuson Supercharger Mega Thread for 16+ Tacoma - Unboxing, Install DIY, Dyno Video

No I purchased them directly from NGK's website.

 

It's the belt.The belt has a squeak during cold starts that can sound like a click. I confirmed with Magnuson, seems normal during cold starts.

 

To give you an idea of the work RSG does... Here is the hose on my install that you circled in blue in your photo. The hose cut is jagged, no clamp. Sigh.

 

Oof. That is just plain disappointing, at a minimum.

 

Almost everything they've touched needed to be redone, wasn't checked, or didn't work right when they call to say your truck is ready. I am terrified what future ghosts I'll find from the SC install.

 

Sounds a lot like when I had my Twin Turbo kit. The shop I went with was partnered with the university I graduated from, so I had some loyalty there, and they were highly recommended.

Was an absolute disaster. Took months to complete, and it turned out that the guy they had working on it was barely even part time, doing maybe 4-6 hours per week at most.

By time it was done it had been like 3 months and then I kept encountering so many issues that I was fixing myself...by the time it was running right I'd probably repaired or redid 90% of the kit myself. Smh.

 

I found a supercharger locally, new in box. Would be nice to save on tax, shipping, long wait, etc.

Are there any downsides to this? I need to reach out to Magnuson and see if the warranty would transfer.

 

Definitely check. I remember reading that an installed supercharger’s warranty isn’t transferable and they may say the same thing about purchasing from a “non authorized dealer” regardless of whether it is new in the box.

 

I think you're right. I was just digging through the warranty fine print:

"4) All warranty items are extended from the date of purchase to the original consumer/purchaser on record for the original vehicle the product was installed on. The warranty is not transferrable to subsequent owners."

Additionally-

"Requirements: Full details are in the warranty, found here, but the warranty is effective only if there is: 1. online registration of the warranty on the website form, provided here, within 30 days of purchase"

I don't know if the discount buying this "new/used" supercharger would be worth it.

 

Depending on the price I would jump on it myself, especially since I wouldn't want to have to pay for the Magnuson tune just to turn around and buy another one here

 

Vaguely recall their three yr warranty starts the day the truck was put in service and not the purchase date of the SC. Not sure if they since changed it, have to scrutinize their website to confirm.

if it is NIB and you inspect it to ensure it is a said, and the price is what you consider to be a "deal" then IMO you should get it. The install is not difficult if you have knowledge, skill, tools and time. I did mine and have had no issues - others have had "dealer/shop" install and have had issues. There is a sense of satisfaction knowing it was done properly - and unless you are the one doing the work you simply never know for sure. GL.

 

I do not post very often, but I appreciate the excellent information posted by others. That being said, I have been driving Toyota trucks since 1986. Like others, the reliability and resale value have made me a loyal customer. My latest truck is a 2018 Limited, AT, 4x4, crew cab. Previously I had a 2010, V-6, AT, 4x4, Double Cab. I was very pleased with my 2010 and couldn't wait to get the 3rd gen with even more horsepower. I was shocked (and saddened) when my 2018 performed worse on the road than my 2010! Like many of you, not wanting to give up, I followed the "rabbit hole" in search of a "fix" to make my 3rd gen perform better. I was one of the original purchasers of OVTune's ECU/TCU remap which helped, but still left me wanting for more. Each new map that OV (Matt) would create I would dutifully upload to my truck and appreciate the small improvement. Then in 2020 I moved to Utah. My new home was at 6000 feet elevation. Now, more than ever, my 3rd gen's weakness was on full display! Back down the rabbit hole I descended in search of another "magic bullet" to wake up my truck. Magnuson was developing a SC for the 3rd gen and I had heard that Toyota dealers were actually installing them (without voiding your Toyota warranty). PERFECT FIT!! I placed my pre-order with Magnuson and anxiously awaited the arrival and dealer install of my "3rd Gen Fix". When the SC was installed the dealer also flashed my ECU with Magnuson's SC map. My first drive yielded positive results. Yes, it had more power, but something still didn't feel right. The only way I can put it is, my truck still felt like it wasn't "in sync". Even though it had more power, it still seemed like the engine, transmission, and SC were not "on the same page". There existed a constant struggle of which unit was in charge. Performance was often muted because the transmission was in the wrong gear, or the engine was at the wrong rpm, or the SC was surging at the wrong time. Then I started reading about YotaWerx's efforts to create a map made just for 3rd gen Maggy trucks. Like so many other solutions I had read about (and tried) I wondered if the "hype" would fall short of the actual performance. The YotaWerx Stryker is NOT cheap, so my reluctance to try it was real. Well, after much research and thought, I decided to go for it! All I can say is WOW!!!. The Stryker tune is worth every penny. Never before has my truck performed like this. The tune is truly the "Conductor" that the orchestra has been begging for. My truck is ALWAYS in the right gear, ALWAYS at the correct RPM, and ALWAYS ready to provide peak horsepower when I step on the throttle. How sad it is that Toyota didn't deliver our trucks this way in the first place. I now look forward to at least another 10+ years of driving my truck with a smile on my face. One more thing, I am convinced that the SC (and tune) is actually going to extend the life of my engine. Prior to the supercharger, I was constantly driving between 3000-4000 rpm on the freeway and up inclines just to keep it at 70mph. Now, (with 33" tires and a 4" lift) I easily cruise at 80+mph and my engine is barely working at 2000 rpm. 300k miles here I come! .

any one made in 1/4 miles passes and willing to share the resuts ... really only looking for same trucks with before and after sc... what does 7k get you in real life peformance --- I recall a trd sc tundra killing my ca special mustang Gt by maybe 5 lenths in the 1/4 mile about 8 years , would love to hand that feeling to someone else with me in a sc taco!

 

Really enjoyed reading this. of course because I’m thinking of re-gearing and adding a supercharger.
I’m at 7,000ft in CO and it’s scary to pass people because of the lack of power. And just hardly being able to get out of my own way. I have 33s too and bumper and a few extras.

did you have to add any larger fuel injectors or a new fuel pump or any other additions along with the supercharger?

I drive to work up this huge pass and it’s steep and I’m always at 4Krmps to get up the hill. Otherwise I won’t make it

I have not had to add anything except the supercharger and Yota Stryker tune.

 

Has anyone had any engine problems due to the supercharger?

 

I have been running mine for 10 months with no problems. I also made several other modifications (Throttle body, 5.29 gears, full exhaust [block to tip], JamesT fuel rails, YotaWerx 87mm pully Tune, etc). I had it dyno'ed last week and it was putting down 340 wheel HP (400 calculated crank HP based on parasitic loss calculated by dyno).

Edit: To clarify I didn't put my HP numbers there to brag but rather to highlight that I am pushing a good bit more HP than the SC by itself with no issues. If one is concerned about putting to much wear and tear on the engine with the SC you can mitigate some of that by also regearing to 4.88 or 5.29. Which from my experience will also help with the lack of low end torque.
