    Hello friends,

I am removing the engine from my 1997 Tacoma to do some repairs.

Currently following a detailed engine removal from 2CarPros found thru here--VERY helpful. ^-^

I am wanting to remove Engine while leaving the transmission.

Here's the stickler, I feel I've removed all wiring (hoses etc) that connect engine to frame; removed bolts from bell housing ( to tranny); removed bolts to engine mounts. Yet . . .

The engine is not lifting with ease yet. Acknowledge this is a detailed--multi-step job:

does any thing obvious stick out to any one/I may be missing?

Those steps I believe are connected to removing transmission, I've left (not doing), they are:

    Removing/disconnecting shifting lever

    Clutch

    Removing/lowering drive shaft

The transmission mount/cross shaft (uncertain about this one)

    Looking for some guidance

Did you have to evacuate the A/C system of refrgerant before removing the engine?

The O2 harness bolted to the transmission on the right side!!

It sucks when you tear the wires out of the plug

You are going to have to pry/move the engine forward before you lift it. The input shaft of the transmission is is in the pilot bearing of the crankshaft.

You can lift it some. But too much and you’ll only put it in a bind and make it “stuck” worse.

If understanding correctly/answering right question, yes, I removed AC compressor.

There are usually dowel pin on the block or transmission too. Those alone keep it in place. Lifting it a little will release pressure to help pry it apart. But don’t lift it much.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
If this is the first time getting the bell housing off the block I made a special pry bar to wedge between the block and bell housing and pry things apart.

i find it hard to believe a detailed instruction does not mention the guide pins which can be a royal pain to break free or the input shaft length clearance needed to lift .

Most times trying to get the engine back onto the transmission it takes 3 people once was enough for me.

5 lug the trans would be on the ground first thing!!

    Best of luck

    Hi

    Followup

Here's where I'm at with engine removal

There's a beautiful gap between the bell housing n engine you can see below

Created with crow bar; prying from underneath the engine. It's about 3/4 inch gap . . .

I'm at a bit of a stand still--its a lil stuck: pulling the engine forward hasn't widened the gap any more, nor has prying it top/bottom.

It's completely released from the side motor mounts (left n right sides of engine) anyone know, is it mounted anywhere else?

Looking for suggestions to free it

    Hi

    for sure ^-^

To The guide, to clarify, is removing engine n tranny together. I am choosing to bypass removing tranny.

So it's a lil Frankenstein monster ^-^ following guide, guessing/using my judgement and finding answers along the way.

Appreciate peak into future putting it back in _/\_

Like I said this being a 2wd my first move would be the transmission on the ground.

It makes getting the engine out 100% easier because you do not need to clear the input shaft.

    Congratulations!

So i'm curious what "repairs" were needed that pulling the engine was deemed necessary...

When I removed my transmission from my 98 (left engine alone) it took so much effort to get it apart. We ended up using a come-a-long to pull it apart and when it separated it was quite the spectacle. It just didn't want to free itself from there.
