2nd Gen Tacoma Water Pump.

My friend own a 2006 Tacoma with 100k on it, and he was told he should replace the water pump, even though it's not even in the maintenance schedule book. The Toyota dealership he goes to recommended it being done between 60-100k.

I own a 2008 with 64k, is this something I should be thinking about? I never heard of replacing a perfectly good working accessory on a engine.

 

My 2009 has the original water pump...150k

 

Check the weep hole on the bottom. If it's puking replace it.

My original lasted 130k but I have seen them go 200+ and as little as 50k.

 

They aren’t known for failing, you’re more likely to need an alternator or idler bearings at around 100k

best way to promote alternator health is a healthy charged battery. It will last forever.

As for water pumps, make sure to change the coolant every 9 years or so

 

I just replaced mine, at 200K as preventive maintenance, along with radiator, fan, fan clutch, and thermostat. My wp had a little dried coolant at the weep hole and the bearing was a little loose. Had no coolant loss or squealing beforehand.

I wouldn't replace the wp unless something needs replacing.

 

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it
If it is not weeping, and your not having heating/cooling issues. Just ask yourself. Why? And get a new dealer. lol

 

In a 2006/2008 that could go for every single part. If you’ve maintained your truck meticulously and not beat on it (off-roading) you can slowly replace maintenance parts when you’re having to replace damaged parts. But I wouldn’t replace parts just to replace parts.

 

That's how I feel, it's a 14 year old truck, no signs of coolant leaks or cooling problems, I'll check the weep hole tomorrow. It's been well maintained and never beaten on, I get being proactive but I think it's ridiculous to replace it at the 60k mile mark, I'll see when I get closer to 100k.

 

And its not broken if you see a little dried-up coolant at the weep hole. If its fresh and dripping, yes, replace.

 

My 07 with 180k miles on it still have the original pump and it is still going strong.

 

That money could be spent towards something else.
I have 163,000 on my 2.7, original water pump.

 

My '06 with the 4.0L engine has almost 150K with the original water pump. Your Toyota dealer is trying to make work. If it's not broke don't fix it.

 

I have an 05 4.0 my water pump was rattling at about 160k, so i replaced it.

It definitely wouldn't hurt to replace it as preventative maintenance.

When the bearing became loose, my engine started running hot...

Definitely, replace your radiator cap and coolant. That is regular maintenance. But like everyone else said, usually the water pump is replaced AFTER the weep hole starts leaking.

 

195k on my 2010 water pump. I’ve changed the coolant a few times but original water pump.

 

2009 2.7 4cly. is at 205,000miles still fine! Wheel bearings, brakes and regular maintenance since new.

 

I might consider a new pump due to the age of the vehicle if I was planning a long road trip out in the boonies or something. But a blanket 60-100k mile replacement on all pumps is silly, they're just looking for work

 

If you do end up changing out the water pump stick with Aisin. Otherwise don't change it until it starts to leak from the weep hole.

 

I tried to check the weep hole but it's really difficult to see with the skid plate and all. I didn't see any sign of coolant leaks whatsoever though in that area, I'll check it out next time it's on the lift but I feel everything is fine. I agree a blanket 60k-100k replacement is ridiculous.

 

My 06 4.0 has 228k with the original water pump. No issues. I need to do head gasket soon so I bought a new one to change while i'm at it as preventative maintenance.

 

This thread is making my 137k original water pump seem like a relative youngster! Glad to see so many are really durable.
