Active Army O4. Looking at O5 in the next two years.

When I worked at a Engineer HQ, one of the DCGs (2 Star) drove a 2nd gen. Another O5 at the time also had a 2nd gen, and he is now an O6. Our COS, O6, also had a 3rd gen like me. There were also two 4runners and another Tacoma driven by other officers in the command group.

I've been retired since 2004 - and now retired a second time for 2 years after spending 16 years in higher education, the last 8 as president of a college. I was fortunate over my 26years of active duty to have served with tremendous NCOs, WOs and officers - really only had two of what I considered bad/unethical raters/senior raters in my chain of command. Both of them flamed out their careers in the end.

Probably the most interesting experience I had with a young soldier reporting a perceived transgression was while I was a battalion commander. I got a Congressional Inquiry - those shotgun blasts that require fast response up the chain of command - where one of my soldiers wrote his Senator complaining that I was preventing him from entering the Army Astronaut Program. I had never even heard of the program so my CSM grabbed a copy of the reg from PAC and we looked it over...then called in the young man. I can't remember the exact requirements for entry into the program but we quickly determined that he was not: a warrant or commissioned officer; a rated fixed-wing pilot with a minimum of 1000 flight hours or had a terminal degree in a science related field. When I asked him if he'd ever even looked at the regulation he said "No." I had him write an apology letter to his Senator for wasting his time...and turned him over to the CSM.

One thing I found through my Army career and then through my time in higher ed is that good leadership is good leadership. I talked to my leadership team at the college about mission focus, ammunition (resource) conservation and used the concepts of the Tactical, Operational and Strategic levels of combat to focus them on how to look at how they planned and responded to things like staffing courses, developing new programs and facility needs. And, I found that leader development even within a college can produce an exceptionally talented and effective mission-focused team.

Just retired last month. Now onboarding for a GS-12 position. Waiting on the VA disability rating/DD-214 and to see iffy 180 day waiver is approved. It’s nice unwinding after 30 years. I had a fantastic career. Wouldn’t change a thing!

Congrats. Is that a Master EOD Insignia sitting up top? I have to say, I haven't come across many Sailors with jump wings who weren't SOF bubbas.

My favorite congressional was the same letter with the same non-issue about not being sent to a school due to various flags that was sent three times over a span of 6 years. Found the first two in a file of previous congressional inquiries. Those went to congressmen and the mine was to a senator. Investigation didn’t take long. The response included copies of the previous two inquiries & responses along with what suspension of favorable personnel actions means and the three counseling statements from each time he was flagged. My CSM asked why he didn’t let the chain of command work it first then he declined the opportunity to step on the scales and do an apft that day if he thought his company was wrong. Should have made him apologize like Devious did but he got the point that it takes more than years of service to be higher on an OML.

At least you can change yours. The poll lumps all us warrants together, whether you’ve been in for two years or 40 years.
