While researching headlight upgrades for the FJ40 I came across a lot of concerns about LED headlights not generating enough heat to melt the snow off of them. So I would like to know how LED fogs and light bars do in these conditions. I am looking at Diode Dynamics and Baja for both but leaning towards Diode SS3 fogs and 30" combo bar behind the grille.

    Any experiences?

Definitely a legitimate concern if you live and drive where it snows. Our very own @crashnburn80 has done quite a bit of testing on LED fog pattern pods as you can read in the post below:

The LED SAE J583 Fog Pod & Fog Light Review | Tacoma World

To cut right to the chase, the Diode Dynamics Pro and Max models are the only ones that really melt snow and perform as a good fog should. That said, the Pro has a less well-defined horizontal beam pattern that makes it kind of tough to use on the street. (I know, because I tried, then went to the Max.) The Max will not only melt snow, but it's about the best fog pod you're going to find out there.

As for LED bars, crash has not tested them because there's just too many different ones out there. Will some of them melt snow? I honestly don't know. I did have a 30" DD Stage LED bar in the lower grill on my Tacoma. Did it melt snow? I don't know because it was an all driving pattern bar and one never wants to use something like that in the snow.

For round LED headlights that are heated, you might find post #457 interesting.

You can read the reviews linked in the thread, but as @Too Stroked mentions, selective yellow Max is really the only way to go for LED fogs in snow.

LED light bars are worthless in snow. You want low beam cut offs so you are not blinded by the snow. You don’t drive in snow with high beams on as it does more harm than good, so why does a light bars ability to melt snow matter? I wouldn’t worry about light bar snow performance for purchasing as it is irrelevant.

The light bar melting matters not so much for when it is actively snowing since that would blind me as the driver, but for cleaning off. If it’s mounted behind the grille I can see it being difficult to clear it off. I spend some time in the winter in remote areas and might like the bar for various things from extra campsite light, to off road illumination.

I’m on a “too many projects at once” budget so maybe I will skip the bar for now so I can get the max instead of the sport fogs.
