Those who's 2TR-FE left them stranded - what went wrong?

Well just this week at 205K my head gasket went. Before this I replaced the clutch at 180k. Other than that I have replaced a lot of parts preventatively. Besides the clutch only the alternator actually died on me.

Well, mine hasn't left me stranded yet, bought it with 230k miles. But the AC clutch did take a dump on me and made one hell of a racket when it came apart! Definitely had the hood up on the side of the road at 1am to make sure it didn't damage anything. 5431BA6C-DA05-45DC-B785-8C2F83D152E3.jpg

Timing chain snapped at 101K - just unlucky I guess. Still looking for a good remanufactured engine. Jasper does not have any in stock.

The one on my replacement truck with 200k miles is sticking, so it's getting an AC delete pretty soon.

My son has a 2005 5-speed stick 4-cyl Access Cab. Purchased 2018 with 145K on it. Current: +- 250,000 miles. Engine: Valve cover gaskets: 220K; oil-pan leak resolved with new oil pan and gasket: 240K (Corrosion on the oil pan) Coolant cross-over pipe at 200K. That's it. Peripherals: Alternator +- 150K. Clutch master and slave cylinder: 180K Clutch, throw-out bearing, rear main seal and a few misc items replaced: 230K.

It burns no oil. Once the cross-over coolant pipe was replaced with the new metal version, it stopped seeping out pink coolant all over the place too. I would expect this truck to easily surpass 300,000 miles without any major mechanical repairs. It had the frame replacement performed and it's holding up well. If anything kills it, it will probably be cab underbody-rust in the rockers, cab mounts and rear dog-legs behind the rear doors; but that a long ways away.

Edit: We take turns on who drives to Central and Northern Maine in the spring to fish and camp. We're thinking of going to the Moosehead and Chamberlain Lakes region to fly-fish this spring: It's his turn to drive: Piece of cake and no worries about the 2005 4-cyl stick getting us there and back. (and it gets much better gas mileage than my V6... more money for fishing stuff and the non-resident fishing licenses.

I for whatever reason googled the 2trFE and this thread came up..... My truck is about as fast as turtle in maple syrup but it sure has longevity.... the term "bullet proof" comes up alot just like on my Vstrom......I do all the service myself because I can and some dealers can be morally questionable... plus as a general rule most don't give a F#$K about my truck just how much they can charge..... so I turn the wrench.

my 19 only has 50k on it and from what I read it has a service life of 250K.... throw a little conservative driving and proper maintenance and maybe I'll get 500k out of it..... Wish I had a MT... but those were hard to find....

I have occasionally wondered if the reason that toyotas (in general) are reliable because the owners take care of them or because of the designs .... probably some of both....

165,000 miles- looks like I need to replace the oil pump or the o-ring from the oil pump to the pickup. Same amount of work. I installed a pressure gauge off the oil filter to confirm the idiot light on the dash was correct. In cold weather the oil light stays on a long time and the engine runs rough until the light goes off. I will go talk to the mechanic about this Monday. Seems like $3,000 ? any guesses on cost?

Are you still around here at all, still have the taco? I've experienced basically the same thing as yourself. I know you rebuilt yours and I haven't got around to it. Truck started consuming lots of oil around 250-260k miles. Lost the head gasket at around 270k, could smell coolant and had to top off daily. Bought a new truck at 275k.

Still have the taco and it's pulled the new truck, f250 with plow, out a couple of times. Drive it occasionally but the clutch is frozen. I still think it would take me across the country if I kept dumping oil and coolant in it.

I had a dirty fuel injector that sent my truck into limp mode. It would regularly misfire on cylinder 4. I swapped the CAT, the coil pack, and the spark plug, but it solved nothing. Then I ran Lucus's fuel injector cleaner, and she Came to life. I most likely had some contaminated fuel that plugged my injector.

I have a little oil leak from the timing cover behind the alternator on another 2tr taco.

Other than that, there are no issues.

I got my truck with about 168k on the odometer, just rolled 190k and it hasn’t left me stranded yet.

Closest I came was a rusted brake hard line at the front caliper. Had to limp it for a week or two until parts arrived and I had time to take it out of service to do the repair. Was kinda sketch but nothing I haven’t dealt with before.

Also had a seeping coolant bypass pipe last summer but that didn’t sideline me, just topped off coolant frequently until my parts order came in.

Most recent job was a howling serpentine tensioner pulley to which I replaced the whole tensioner along with the belt.

Doing my 190k oil change this weekend…
