Changing over oil filter paper element to spin-on?

The hole is barely big enough for my meat hook to squeeze through, but it's plenty big for an extended socket.

I installed mine after I put on the mini fumoto- even with no hose attachment it drains clean. Now the valve is a convenience factor I did buy into- it isn't required but it does make it easier to avoid a mess and awkward wedging of funnels through your skid. That's worth the 25 bucks to me




And as for the filter - gee, yes, what a huge pain this is over a spin on.




And if you combine it with a DIY wheel rotation, then relatively speaking, no it really doesn't make a bigger dent in my day. We're arguing over maybe a one minute difference between cartridge and spin. That's an expensive upgrade for very little gain.

... That's why most people think it's not worthwhile.

 

why not just remove the plate and leave it off then? kinda defeats the purpose of a skid plate, right? Ski

Yes, it's the TRD Skid.

Here's another view to gauge how small that hole is...mated to my Talon CAT Shield.

I have medium-sized hands and I found it uncomfortable sticking my hand in there to clean up the spilled oil.

I'll be better prepared for the next oil change.

 

Any filter should be capable of removing grit that you can feel. You can’t feel 1 micron or even close to that.

 

Added lube keeps my o-ring slick and pliable. Apply enough lube so your o-ring is moist. Moist is good when it comes to your o-ring....

 

I've had this Mobile 1 oil bottle with me for at least 15 years just for oil changes.

 

Spin-ons don't remove less than 10 microns after a short time in use. Any oil used for 25k miles will bring a early death, if a high filtration by-pass filter is not used.

 

No spin on filters down to 10 microns. Amsoil goes down to 20 microns and for reference Mobile 1 filters go down to 30 microns. Because of the filter media the Amsoil will continue to filter down to 20 microns for most its rated life.

I have been using Amsoil for about 35 years and no, I have never been a dealer. Used it for the farm and personal use. I will use nothing but Amsoil, but I would have no problem using other oil and filters, but would never exceed 4-5k miles on a change.

 

Most don’t give a rating. Donaldson Blue is 90% efficiency at 10 micron.

 

I’m not advocating for extended oil change intervals. I still doubt the idea that tactile grit in the oil is allowed by any functioning oil filter. Of course, if it’s full or failing that’s another story.

 

Donaldson Blue filters are for Diesel and heavy duty trucks and industrial eq. Let me know when they make them for Toyota

 

10 Micron is 1/100mm, why would that matter to a 3.5L engine?

We’re not talking about fillers offered for Toyota. We’re talking about spin on oil filters. The media can be used in numerous applications.

 

yeah, it's on my long term list. although, i'm also considering just modding the oem steel plate. i've got a welder and plenty of scrap!

 

The blue filters being for diesel and heavy duty trucks are way too long to work on a Taco, especially with the Baxter adapter and are designed for much different pressures. . . . . . . and I bet they would not fit the thread size either. You find one that will work and not hang down you let me know and I will look into into it.

 

You can see bearing debris from failures in the oil. All of this gets through a filter, granted filter will grab a lot but you can see all the shiney metal bits in the oil. If you can see the brass and steel in the oil, you can definitely feel it.
