I took advantage of the fine day to have a patrol around the estate.

What do you suppose is brutalizing this tree??

There is a section about 8 feet long -- that starts 8 feet up with more damage, bark gouged off almost 1/2 way round the tree, the camera couldn't see it well due to the light.
Edit: I put it in at the bottom.

    KIMG2785.jpg

    Only this tree

    KIMG2791.jpg

    Shredding was about 10" long

    KIMG2786.jpg

    Chunks-o-tree all around the base.
This is on a steep side hill, I'm looking down at the tree.

    KIMG2792.jpg

This is the real bad section, it starts 8 feet up!

I guess they're not extinct?

Agree with others about it likely being beetles. Woodpeckers then excarebate the damage peeling back the bark trying to eat the beetles. Woodpeckers would not do this type of damage on their own. Being 8' up, it has to be some kind of insect.

I have an arborist friend who would know if you're really trying to figure this out. Just need to know what state and then I could send him the photos.

Some type of insect chews down on the tree . Wood Peckers go after the juicy insects

The slight breezes we had get under the bark and it blows off.

The tree is dead correct ??

I have one just like that since our slight breezes if I remember I will take a picture.

In this area were MR Green Lives Porkypines are few and far between.

I know people that lived up there all their lives have never seen a live one.

in 20 years driving most of the roads up there I have only seen a few flat ones.

I must say I think Porkypines might need lots of spices to over come the pine taste.

Not something I would go out of my way to eat again.
