    The horizontal gouging looks very similar, what I found odd was that the largest damaged section started 8 feet off the ground and was probably 8 feet long.

    Spoke to my arborist friend. He says he possibly sees beetle holes in one photo, but can't be sure, and no matter what the fresh peeling of live bark is not beetle related. He was thinking some kind of mammal. When I told him 16' up he agreed porcupine was the likely culprit.

    Probably not. The noise would be a brush sound from the pad drag (unless down to indicator, but would chirp). Think of it like a warped record, where the shoes are dragging across only the peaks. Chatter in the front end is typically looseness in a tie rod ball or dampener. If you have chatter and shake in your wheel… PS pump failures typically show that way.
