I realized that base to tip wasn't a fair and true measurement.
From Collar to full mark: 29 1/8"
From Collar to low mark: 30 5/16"

You idiots have me laughing so hard over here.

I jumped up off the couch and my wife asked, "Where are you going?" I replied, "To measure my stick for some random guys online." She asked, "You starting from the top, or are you still starting from the underside of your coin purse?" I asked, "Does it really matter?" She said, "For men? Yes. For women? Yes. But we prefer from the top." I love her!

Anyways, for the sticks that matter in real life...

    Mine is this long:
    20230103_210907.jpg

    And the model number:
    20230103_210844.jpg

And from the o-ring to the marks (base of coin purse length?):
    20230103_211048.jpg

And then from the end to the marks (our true length = > 6 inches, right? Right?!):

    Carry on.

My garage is too cold to get an accurate measurement. I only go by summer lengths, but not on the days I've been swimming.

You never get all of the old oil out. I always fill a little less than the specs call for. About 1 qt less. Start the engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes then check the dipstick. Add as needed to reach the fill line.

A trip to the dealer to compare your stick length should take care of things. Hopefully you are not shorter than average.

you did confirm you drained the engine oil and not the trans, right? Right?

This. picture in your mind how much oil it would take to fully coat all of the oiled surfaces inside an engine with a thin, residual (non-flowing, no longer subject to gravity) coat of oil. That oil counts towards total fill volume but doesnt leave the engine during a normal oil drain/refill. Hard to say exactly how much, but probably at least a couple tenths of a liter?

I’ve read a few TacomaWorld threads in full on this topic and now I have “THE ANSWER!” For an accurate reading, run your truck for a bit to get it to operating temperature (when temps increase stuff expands so nice always been told to check oil on a warm engine.) Pull the dip stick, wipe it off, and let it sit for 5 minutes or so to let the oil drain down to the pan and out of the dip stick tube. Grab your stick, get it started in the tube, then before you get too deep, thrust it all the way in until it’s fully inserted, and pull it out immediately. With the end pointed down, quickly set it down on a blue shop rag paper-towel, and rotate it once so you can see the wet oil mark on the rag compared to the oil level markings of the stick right next to each other.

If anyone is interested, I’m willing to take some pictures or something to assist with this. It can be frustrating. I also made cross hatched etching on the tip of my stick which wasn’t totally necessary after using the method above.

^Instructions unclear. How many pumps do you do before pulling out?

Please don't post pictures of your dipstick here. Save that for Snapchat.

It sounds to me like you didn't get all the oil out when you drained it. Was the engine/oil hot when you started? If done on a cool engine, more oil will remain throughout the engine and fail to fully drain. Could lead to an overfill later.

Another thought: was the truck truly level when you drained it?

Seams we have showers and growers here. Before I got my 23 sport I had a 2003 Tundra v8, changed oil and filter 7qts as recommended put it right on the full mark every time no matter when I checked it. I also change oil on semi trucks for over 36 years where gallons are involved, in some instances engines are filled to factory specifications and remarked on the stick to insure the correct amount is registered. I have an appointment on the 20th to get my (FFF) first free oil change,I will definitely check it before I leave the lot.

I have a 2023 sport with 3100 miles (5000km) on it, still on the factory fill and it's always been 1 quart (liter) over. If I put the stick into just the Oring it comes out correct, but if I drive the stick all the way home it's overfilled. I've been checking cold so I'll try it hot next time and will wait 10 minutes, I agree the dipstick level sucks when trying to see the line.

Are you suppose to only stick it in as far as the Oring ?

BTW I also own a vintage Porsche and to check the oil the engine must be hot, running, the dipstick is under the oil fill cap so you have to stick your fingers in to get them oily and burn them, plus you have dance like a can-can girl, lift your skirt, tongue stuck out to the left, yada, yada...and it's still easier to check (see) the dipstick than on my taco.

    Sand the tip
    Remove the dipstick
    Wipe it
Wait 5 minutes with dipstick out
    Insert dipstick
Remove & see an easy to read level on dipstick
