Thanks Hector. I have considered the garnish as the issue and I'll see if I can find one that has been reliable. As for the OEM garnish, I've heard they are ridiculously priced and I will just put the old grille back in before I go that route.

What I can't figure out is that whenever you first start the truck everything will work perfectly for 10 minutes or so then the light comes on. If you are driving with the cruise engaged it disengages and I get the error. That kind of makes me agree with you that it's the garnish causing the issue.

Would you be willing to take a close up pic of how your garnish sits in the grille?

My 2018 had the same issue when I bought it. The previous owner put an aftermarket grille and used the old garnish that is the same as the grille (not the flat glossy one). The radar worked properly like that. I swapped it with an aftermarket flat garnish and it had the same issue u have. I ended up trading the truck in with the garnish that worked. I since upgraded to a 2021 and used oem parts with no issues. I’m sure it’s your garnish, I did a ton of searching online and came to the conclusion that some garnishes work and some don’t. If you want aftermarket, get one that people have reported to work.

You didn't ask me but this is the only one with a close-up shot of the Garnish area. There's a purposeful slight angle in the grill & garnish so when you attach the garnish, the top portion tilts in slightly so it looks like it projects upward.

I bought mine from EmpyreOffRoad and the garnish was shipped separately.

Thanks a whole bunch Ed. These pics are very helpful. Only difference I can see between yours and mine is mine actually says TOYOTA on it above the A1. I looked at a bunch of them on ebay and all of the aftermarket ones don't say TOYOTA above the A1 but the ones that appear to be genuine OEM do. Thanks for the info about the tilt too - very helpful.

Have you installed this yet? Just curious if it has been working okay for you

There is a thread on here which shows that there is counterfeit Toyota garnishes. It says Toyota and all that but one is fake. You need to carefully examine the photos in that thread to determine if you have a real one.

    You're welcome!

I've had no issues since install in August/this year and I test the TSS/DRCC/LDA every time I'm on the highway...works just fine and no errors!

Here's a recent pic with my Bushwacker Fendys! Lift and bigger tire set-up is in my future.

And an early morning pic just as I was going into work before the fendy's were installed.

Thanks Martian. I suspected that. After looking at those pics and the fact that mine had the plastic film on it, I'm convinced it is a counterfeit. I took it out and drove the truck with it off and it works fine. Definitely the garnish is the problem. Wonder if I shaved some of the plastic down on the back if it would work then? I'm thinking about trying that. Can't think what else it could be other than thickness?

It’s really hard to say why it’s not working with that garnish. If I had an aftermarket grille, I would just get an aftermarket garnish that people say works. If I had an oem grille, I would just get the oem garnish. I found mine here on tacomaworld from someone who was selling a brand new one for 200.

Okay, so I figured what the hell and shaved off some of the plastic on the rear of the garnish with a sanding drum on my dremel. Put it all back together and took a test drive and no light. I'm not going to say "it's fixed" just yet but so far it's looking good. I'll report back in a couple of days. Thanks again to those of you who chimed in.

They just said that to me as well. I have the dreaded 30mph deceleration vibe issue that there is a TSB for . They said my same size as stock AT tires are causing the vibes. Horse shit, I just took off the stock tires and wheels a week ago and the vibes are the same.

Going to wait until the Spring put my stocks back on and try again . Fuckers. I know the difference between tire/road noise and deceleration vibes. Just like the TSB says.

UPDATE: I drove to Texas and back over New Years weekend. Drove all the way to TX using cruise and had no problems. On the return trip, however, the light came on twice but I am hoping it was just because the garnish had become dirty with bugs, etc. (Couldn't believe I murdered so many bugs for this time of year. Front of the truck was a mess)

Thanks for the heads up. Getting ready to put an aftermarket grille on mine and appreciate the info. Hopefully I won't need it.

Put the trd lift kit on that came with a look alike pro type grill, garnish, etc. The display screen lit up..see dealer, so I did. Dealer calibrated and all is well except for my wallet
