My 2002 Tacoma was rear ended while in park several months ago. Appeared to be very minor damage, busted driver tail light and dent in rear panel. Accident shifted my truck out of the parking stall about 6”. Truck started but when I went to shift into reverse the button on the floor column shifter was a little clicky, but after a few pushes I got it into reverse, then again it was clicky again to put into drive. I drove 2 miles and turned off. It never started again and I could not get it out of park.
Several people suggested it was the Park Neutral Safety Switch (PNSS). I replaced the starter hoping that would help, but still wouldn’t start. Toyota finally diagnosed that it was the PNSS, starter relay, and the original starter were all bad. It now starts and drove two blocks, but now will not go into reverse and is stuck in 2nd gear. Toyota is saying complete transmission failure. They have not dropped the pan or anything because they don’t really work on transmissions other than take them out and install new one’s.
They also replace the driver tail light.
The other persons insurance is denying any responsibility for the engine problems and said those could not happen in the rear end accident. I have found online people saying stuff about the tail light blowing fuses and stuff or solenoids, but their insurance says anyone can put anything online, and Toyota will not say that those things could happen in an accident like this, due to liability.
Can I find anything written anywhere? I just need something on a mechanics letterhead stating this can happen. I have been without a vehicle since August 26, 2022.
Also, do you feel I need a new transmission or might it be a fuse or something? I have 167,000 on it, full records from day one and never experienced any indications of starter or transmission issues. I had just had major preventative engine work done two weeks prior to the accident, which their insurance doesn’t know that yet. I’ve given them too much info as it is.
Please, any help would be appreciated. I’m just tired of being taken advantage of.

Get your insurance to go after them. Insurance companies goals are to NOT pay claims. Most of them are pretty bad sadly. These symptoms only happened after this accident and now your pickup isn't the same after it. It's complete BS what they are saying. I wouldn't back down and don't be afraid to push them for it. Rear ending could of shifted something out of alignment and the other insurance company probably doesn't want to pay the high price it would be to replace any of that.

I would make friends with a reputable mechanic that can get a letter stating that the damage they see was caused by the accident (if they can prove it). Maybe 2 of them.

    Good luck!

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
A impact that pushed a parked truck 6" can cause all manor of drive line mechanical problems.

    Get your insurance company involved!!

The downside is your Truck could then be totaled.
