3rd gen access cab dog beds/hammocks/solutions?

Hey what’s up. New member to the community, been a taco enthusiast for a long time and finally got my 2020 access cab sr5 4x4 v6 Tacoma. So happy. Anyways I have my dog and my girlfriends dog that we enjoy taking around. So just wondering if any other 3rd gen AC owners have solutions to a good setup for the small backseats of my truck for my dogs? Was considering building somethin out of plywood for the time being like a level surface that fits over the seats but seems like it may be more work than it’s worth. Let me know if you guys have products that you’ve bought that work in an AC. THANKS YALL

 

I found a good solution from this site that another poster used, sorry don’t have the link but if you search you may find it. But basically there is a toolbox from DeWalt called a TSTAK that has a flat top and fits perfectly in the footwells in the back, and is level with the storage under the jumpseats. 1 of those on each side and then I just put down a pad and a few blankets to give some more padding and it’s a great level space for my 60lb mutt. And the toolboxes give you some additional locked storage which is nice.

When placed in the footwells their height is just the same as the height of the storage boxes under the jumpseats so you can make a pretty level surface. I just placed an old crate mat on top and a few blankets to add some padding. My dog is not tiny and has plenty of room to stand and look around, or lay down to sleep. It’s been working well, and was no-build and adds a little storage too.

 

Mine was pretty cheap. I’m going to redo this but good enough for now.

Initially I just had the boxes and then the plywood with his bed on it. Then I raised it up for more storage and so he can see out the back window a little better.

The boxes were really hard to get out so I am going to build some little cubbies for them and mount vertically so they’ll support instead of the 2x4.

I made a dog platform similar to the picture in post #1. My Golden Retriever loves the platform and loves looking out the rear window.

Following advice from others on the forum I got a pre cut shelf board 3/4 by 20 by 48 inches and cut 2 10.25 inch 2x4's for legs. Used some pipe insulation around the edges and wrapped it in a moving blanket from harbor freight double thick on top for some cushion. I think he approves.

 

I started with the DeWalt toolboxes and Foam kneepad that is popular here, then just today I added a 1/4" sheet of plywood and carpet.

I use it as a flat platform and add a dog hammock when my lil buddy rides with me.

 

Which dog hammock did you buy to fit into that access cab space? Are you happy with the way it fits back there? It seems to me like most of the dog hammocks are made for full / standard back seats, so I’m wondering if there’s a lot of excess fabric to take into account. But if you’re happy with the fit of the one you bought I’d love to check it out in time for our new rescue pup arriving soon thanks!

 

Adapt what I did for my second gen...Only other thing I would add is some kind of covering on the contact points of the wood on the door and seat plastic to prevent scratching. Cost me like $50

We use our Orvis hammock and it is fantastic. Easy to clean, attach/detach, comfortable, etc...

 

Just the standard one from Amazon that hooks up to the rear of the front seats and is supposed to clip to the front of the "back seats" but I just clip it to where the headrests used to be in the access cab.

 

After 8 years of use, I re-carpeted my dog platform this month. Took a couple of pictures since I had it out. The platform sits on the access cab storage cubbies with the rear seats folded up

I do not have this need - but looking at the platforms, I was thinking about adding a 2x4 'stiffener along the front edge and putting the support in the middle (or maybe two 'legs' centered some 18" apart). This would add stiffness to the plywood and allow for unrestricted access to the space below from the door openings.

3/4" plywood may be stiff enough.

Just a thought... This may or may not work as I am not familiar with the access cab, but if you can support the board in the middle instead of at the ends you'll open up the sides for access.
