If you are burning 1 quart every 3K miles then you are more than okay Robert.

For the record burning 1 quart every 1500 miles is considered acceptable by most manufacturers.

As I go along, we'll see what's "normal". That was with the factory 0W20 stuff.

Awesome CB setup, TRD leaf springs, matching camper shell...more to come some day.
I learned one of the first things with burning oil on this engine was to always check that gasket around the spark plugs....it will slowly allow oil to deep into cylinders 3&4. Pretty certain that's how I ruined my first Cat early.

I wanted to report back on my experiences, I started off burning about 1 quart per 1500 miles when I noticed it was burning it progressively got worse to the point every time I put gas in I was adding a quart of oil. anyways, i did a lot of research online and ended up finding this guys youtube channel and this series in particular

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EG70jHiT-S0&t=11s

he had pretty decent results using b12 chemtool. so figured I had nothing to lose and would give it a shot, I changed my protocol up a bit from what he did. I used 4 cans, i drained all the oil first and left the oil pan under the truck without the cap on and poured 1 can in all 4 cylinders every 6 hours, manually turned the engine over multiple times/rinse repeat the process until all 4 cans had gone. let everything drain out, add fresh oil and fingers crossed.
it was really hard to get the truck started after this process and i really hoped i didnt damage the cylinders/cylinder walls, in hindsight i should have lubricated the cylinders before starting, either way, the truck eventually started and I have now driving approx 3300 miles and have not used a drop of oil. the oil in fact still almost looks like i just changed it 50 miles ago. where as before it would be black within 50 miles.

anyways, this has brought a new life to that little engine, and am very excited with the results. I am not sure if its a permanent fix or if issues will not arise in the future because of this procedure. but the power restored and the lack of oil burning is worth sharing.

Hope this helps someone out in the future.

Nice to hear you got good results, I may have to try it if mine ever starts to burn oil.

Can report this works. I had the same problem and did this process and now I don't lose a drop of oil between 5k miles.

That's awesome! I have to say....one thing that I was taught to do by my Dad is that on every sparkplug change I've ever done I always pulled the plugs, and then filled each cylinder all the way up with PB blaster. Leave it alone to "drain" while I check the air filter, change oil on a differential etc. Just make sure I gave it enough time to drain, then change the oil and go from there.

I have 226,000 miles and mine doesn't burn oil....I never used synthetic until about 30k miles ago. It just doesn't burn oil (I change mine and filter every 5k miles). I did put some hatching on the dipstick...to check oil level, I shut off the engine, pull the stick, wipe it and leave it out for ten minutes or so... then check it.

I'm interested in if you did a compression test before and after, and what the numbers were. If this did unstick your oil rings compression should have bumped up back to normal levels.

This could just be a temporary fix for me until I get my new motor rebuilt.

Before I did it, compression was in the 170s. I don't have exacts as it was a mechanic that did it and it was a year ago.

A test to know if rings are good would be a leak down test which I didn't perform. I noticed mostly that there was a lot of oil buildup over at the exhaust which made me feel oil was blowing past the rings and out the exhaust.

I wish I did, the big thing since I did this, I am not at 4k miles and have since done an oil change is that the oil looked new after the last change. any time I did a change when i was burning all that oil after about 50 miles the oil would be black again.

It may only be a temporary fix but I will take it, I did notice a nice power increase since doing this treatment. i didnt realize how bad it had gotten, it must have been real close to the end before i did that treatment

I messed around with the B12 as well recently while doing my clutch job. Poured a can down the plug holes and let it sit. Poured another one after those drained. Drove it for a couple hundred miles before changing the oil.

Now I'm about 1300 miles into the oil change with a quart of MMO in the crankcase. No noticable oil consumption, no buildup of carbon out of the exhaust. Oil is starting to take on a more golden brown hue now

No noticable power difference, but it's been well over a year since I daily drove it, so I don't remember how it was except for anemic.
