I've been looking at head units recently and have gone cross eyed with all the potential options.

I'd like to have all the factory functions work (Non-JBL system) to include the phone and steering wheel controls. I'd like to gain functionality being able to mirror the phone or bring up ON X off road while driving.

I've called Crutchfield to get their advice and it only clouded the decision. People who have firsthand experience upgrading the Tacoma head unit would be appreciated.

BTW, the speakers have been upgraded to Kickers if that makes a difference.

OnX works via Apple CarPlay so any headunit that supports that will work. I personally suggest splurging on a radio with wireless CarPlay.

For phone mirroring, you’ll need a radio with an HDMI input and then you’ll need to modify it to allow video in motion, which is illegal in every state and usually comes with a reckless driving charge if caught.

if your factory radio still works and you mostly want OnX, you could save a lot of money and just buy an iPad mini and a Bluetooth GPS receiver. This will give you a larger and significantly better screen than essentially all head units
Bonus* then you have an iPad mini

There are a lot of Android options. I’m happy with the Joying.
