I know there are companies that sell the track like a dmm but has anyone just drilled in to the dash plastic and mount a ram ball or do you actually need the whole brackets?

you can but its going to be very flimsy and whatever you put on the ball mount will shake easily

I’d say even with the DMM the mounts shake easily. I can only imagine it would be worse mounting directly to plastic

Copy that. Just want to mount a gmrs radio on it. Without spending $100+ on an expedition essential or a dmm.

I did a diy thing between what you're asking about and a legit bracket. I made my own shoddy bracket that goes on the top and another piece (or maybe it was a washer? I can't recall) on the bottom/underneath. It came out sturdy but looks like shit and took way too much time. It'll never be as sturdy as a purpose made solution. I'd recommend you buy something made for this and save the headache.

The DMM would be pretty easy to duplicate with some minor metal working

I mounted my GMRS radio above the wireless charger and then mounted the mic to the DMM.

Yeah, guess there's a reason that someone makes them instead of cutting and drilling. Might just do the dmm route as that's the cheapest for what I need. Does the taco garage have a discount code to use?

I do not have one from them. I’m really pleased with the product though. Once I got it I realized I could have made it. I have access to metal working tools but sometimes it’s worth paying for a finished product. The craftsmanship is nice. It’s really easy to install also with basic tools.

You could try a metal backing plate on the underside. That’s how we mount stuff like that on kayaks sometimes.

The DMM basically is a top plate and backer plate that sandwich the plastic. Pretty simple design

Might do a template and cut out the shape to some aluminum and paint it black? I've searched and haven't found anyone just selling the thin metal piece.

Yeah you could do it with some thin sheet metal. The upper piece was black and the piece that’s inside the trim was raw material.
