I recently had a major failure in my 2008 tacoma and I had to replace my CV Axle, balljoints, and bearings on the front end.

I lifted up my truck and replaced everything on the driver side first, but immediately after the install I tried to spin the hub (no rotor yet) around, and I can hear a distinct metal on metal grinding. There’s also considerable resistance when I spin it. Video below.

Is it possible I overpressed my bearing? Is the grinding noise coming from the axle contacting the seal? What should I try next to troubleshoot this problem?

When you pressed in the new bearings, did you press on the inner race or the outer race?

It might just be the picture but it doesn't look like your inner seal is seated all the way. You can also damage bearings by pressing on the inner race. They aren't designed to take an axial load, especially at zero rpm. I would pull the axle and see if the hub spins free by hand. That way at least you'll know if the problem is in the bearings, or if the problem is being caused by the interference of the axle and seal.

i actually did just try this because I realized the seal might not be in all the way. The bearing spins better with no axle in it, but I’m not sure exactly how freely it should be spinning.
The rubber seal on the interior is a bit bent up now, so I’m going out to buy a new one.
I’ll take your advice with pressing bearings when I do the passenger.
    Thanks!

Something isn’t right with your inner and outer seal.
The outter seal should not be spinning with the CV

I don’t even see an inner seal in the video?

I see what appears to be a gap at top of the seal. Maybe the seal is not seated properly.

    It’s not.

I bet the seal is aftermarket.
And it’s loose in the knuckle.

    I had this problem too:D

OP, the inner seal is on the CV. It turns with the CV.
The inner seal goes into the outer seal.
The outer seal is NOT supposed to spin inside the knuckle.

I had to “bend” my seal out of round to make it tight in the knuckle.
I also used some RTV just to make it “stick” better.

    Aftermarket seals are junk.

But, it doesn’t look like your seal is even seat all the way in.
So go back and recheck it.

Here is a better labeled photo of what’s going on. I’m not home now so I can’t take better photos.
I know the inner seal is not seated well enough. I removed the CV axle, and it has clearly damaged the seal so I’m replacing it.

The one label inner seal in the photo shouldn’t be rubbing the the CV dust shield. (One on the CV)
Maybe that’s where the noise is coming from?

I can not say I know of anyone that’s rebuilt their hub.
Most buy the whole assembly. So I can’t help with what parts might be wrong in the bearing assembly.

thats very helpful, thank you. I’m about to put in my new seal right now, and I’ll make sure it’s flush against the steering knuckle and the dust shield doesn’t rub.

here’s a photo of the first seal (right) after I took it out vs the seal I just bought (left). The spring oring in the old seal seems to have bent out of shape.

You can use the cover that goes over the axle nut to drive the seal in:thumbsup:
You know the metal cover you pry off to get to the nut?

BUT….. if it’s an aftermarket seal, I bet it pushes in my hand.
    Mine did:eek:

Just make sure it fits tight.

really good idea with the metal cover. I figured that out myself

The seal actually fits really really snug. I’m glad I swapped it out. The bearing still doesnt spin as freely as I’d like it to… I’ll have to figure that out.

    I can’t help there.
I just buy the whole hub assembly.

Never rebuilt one, I don’t own a press.

Might just be the dust shield thing rubbing on the rotor
