Tried this mod today with a resistor & spdt switch and burned a ign fuse shifter locked out airbag and abs light came on here's a picture of how i wired it up thinking that's how it went did i miss something?

 

I have a manual trans so I am not concerned with shifting patterns. Would there be any reason to do the more complicated version with 12v other than to not have a blinking 4lo light? Clipping one wire and cleaning it up with heat shrink sounds way more appealing.

 

Any thoughts?

 

I think there's a special screwdriver you can use to just unplug the wire. Maybe find one of those and just pull it from the connector. If you have to reverse it for any reason you won't have to splice/solder

I have a 2015 base 4x4. Is there anything I can do on my truck for the front? I'm intending to get an ARB locker

 

Nevermind just read the last 15 pages. I'm still confused though, lol. Maybe someone can do a step by step write up with photos?

 

Just did original YWM today and it went uneventful. First I disconnected the negative lead then the positive lead. Pulled the glove box off and unplugged the connector and tried to take the wire out with a glasses repair kit screw driver with no luck so I just went and cut it and taped the wire ends. I then went and plugged it back in, connected the positive then negative, went and started the truck, shifted it into neutral then 4low and the 4low indicator flashed with no beeping so I know I did it right. Heres a picture of my work.
I have not needed to use 4low since I got the truck in June of 2020 but I would rather have it and never need it than need it and not have it. Besides it is easy so I thought why not. I might need to find a hill this winter and give it a try

 

Is there a way you can take a photo and/or draw this up so I can understand the new mod, what to cut and where?

 

I just did the updated yellow wire mod, and my ABS and VSC lights are now on all the time.
Wire to pin 9 on connector three was cut, and I connected the non-connector side of that cut yellow and black wire to the 12v yellow wire with a quick splice and 10ohm (all I had) resistor. Any ideas what went wrong?

 

It sounds like you're PC9 wire isn't getting the proper 12v feed. Almost like it's unplugged. Did you try it without the resistor? I spliced PC9 to a new wire all the way to the fuse box via add a fuse. Mine works fine.

 

@Sonofliberty92 Thanks for answering before I even went inside to defrost! It was definitely a 12v supply issue. Seems my wire tap didn’t make proper contact.

I saw the answer to this elsewhere, but I can't find it now. With the YWM, do I now have limited slip in 4L default mode, or do I need to press or hold the VSC button to engage? I'm looking for the best possible traction in snowy offroad situations.

Is my understanding (below) correct? If so, I suppose 4L default is the best option for slick offroad trails in a Yellow Wire Modified 2009-2015 Tacoma (non- TRD OR).

2013 Tacoma Base 4x4 with updated YWM:
•YWM 4L Default - None of these lights will be visible on the dash. This is limited slip mode, and power will be limited by VSC if swerving.
•YWM 4L Trac Off - Trac Off will be visible on the dash. This is open diff mode, and power will be limited by VSC if swerving.
•YWM 4L Trac Off & VSC Off - Trac Off and VSC symbol will be visible on the dash. This is open diff mode, and power will not be limited by VSC if swerving.

 

Yea sounds about right. They're all open diff as you know but by doing this mod, you're basically allowing the truck to access TRAC while in 4LO which limits wheel spin. Mind you, I haven't had to use this for snow because the truck does fine in my location and I live down a steep hill. For the most traction in 4LO, you'd want your labeled "default" setting.

I have since added a Harrop Elocker to my truck but this feature will certainly help when and if the time comes.

 

From what I've seen, Toyota has since made this TRAC option accessible in 16+ trucks. Every video I've seen of this updated "YWM" mod seems like it does yield great results. I did a write up on how to do the PC9 mod (updated YWM) because I was getting way to confused on this thread and thay write up has videos of the mod working with various Toyota vehicles.
