Recently bought a 99 with the 3rz. Engine has 305,000 on it. The radiator froze and the truck overheated. There doesn’t seem to be any coolant in the oil, but now the truck won’t start.

I did a compression test and I have lost almost all compression in cylinder 1. Cylinder 2-4 are all below spec as well around 120.

I’m going to start tearing things apart and see what everything looks like, but I’m expecting a blown head gasket and/or warped head.

If that is the case, should I try and fix it or get a replacement engine? I have looked online for a JDM engine, but they seem to be few and far between. Does anybody have any leads on one?

    Thanks in advance!

305k is pretty far up there, but I guess it depends on how long you want to keep it, it might be fine. If you DIY it the head gasket is probably still cheaper than a replacement, and you might many more hundreds of thousands out of it. Or maybe not - nothing is real certain here. If you're paying someone to do the work, I would go find another engine to drop in.

It’s a hunting truck so I would like to keep it for a while but don’t expect the miles to be a lot. I’ve got everything taken apart and I’m gonna pull the engine next time I have a day off. I would probably do all the work myself except for whatever machine work it would need.
I am leaning towards dropping another engine just so I’m not without the truck for so long. The probably is I haven’t been able to find one locally so far.
